ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Champe Clark Mitchell, 86, formerly of Crawley, passed away in the Lynn Care Center at Front Royal following a short illness.
Born on Jan. 18, 1922, at Springdale, he was the son of the late John William and Martha Callison Mitchell.
Champe proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a farmer on the family farm as well as in the coal mines before moving to Virginia in 1962 where he was a carpenter for Rich Marr Construction. He was a member of the Meadow Grove Baptist Church at Dawson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife to whom he was married for over 65 years, Myrtle Cadle Mitchell on March 31, 2008 and a daughter, Doris Ann Mitchell; a brother, Isaac L. Mitchell; twin sisters, Evyline Jeffries and Ernestine Mitchell.
Survivors include a son, Donald Mitchell and wife, Sharon of Fredericksburg, Va.; a daughter, Linda Mitchell Lambert and husband, Danny of Front Royal, Va.; two step granddaughters, Sheila Scotto di Clemente and husband, Sal and Jessica Lambert; and one step great-grandson, Mason Gorgan.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Smathers Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Maude Chapel Cemetery, at Grassy Meadows.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
