Charles Eugene Maples, 73, husband of Bobbie L. Maples, died Thursday, October 25, 2001 in Radford, VA. He was born in LaFollette, TN, a son of the late Lewis and Elizabeth Baird Maples. In 1946, he enlisted as a private in the US Army and rose to the rank of Major. He served overseas in Japan, Panama, Vietnam and Germany.
He retired as a Major and eight years of his service was as an enlisted man. During his distinguished career, he received several commendations for meritorious service, including the Bronze Star and the Legion of Merit. After his retirement from the military, he worked in real estate for several years in various positions in VA and KY. He was very active with Immanuel Baptist Church for many years, where he served as deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. He was a man of principle with a kind heart and a willingness to help others. He was an active volunteer at the local VA Hospital. In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, he is survived by two sons, Martin Eugene Maples, and daughter-in-law, Liddle, Shawsville, VA and Terry Vance Maples, and daughter-in-law, Phyllis Whitson Maples, and their children, Emily Kristen and Justin Nathaniel Maples, Richmond, VA; aunt, Ruth Baird, LaFollette, TN; two nephews, Ben and David Baird, LaFollette, TN; and a niece, Barbara Ann Patterson, CA.
Funeral services 3 p.m. Monday at W.R. Milward -Southland conducted by Dr. Ted Sisk and Rev. Glen Cummins.
Burial in Blue Grass Memorial Gardens, Jessamine Co. Visitation 1 p.m. until service time Monday. Memorials may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
