Bessie P. Gum
CHURCHVILLE - Bessie Baker (Peterson) Gum, 106, of Rt. 1, Churchville, died on Monday (Dec. 12, 1994) at Augusta Medical Center.
She was born on Oct. 19, 1888 at McDowell, a daughter of C. Stuart and Ella Virginia (Bradshaw) Peterson.
She had lived in Churchville for 30 years. A retired teacher, she had taught in Highland County public schools. She was a charter member, of Highland Handweavers Guild, she was the oldest living member of Pisgah Presbyterian Church, where she taught the beginners Sunday school for 50 years.
Her husband, to whom she was married on Jan. 22, 1912, died on Nov. 2, 1964.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Jane Sellers of Churchville; two sisters, Mrs. J.E. Reynolds of Cochranville, Pa., and Mrs. Robert Hodgson of Atglen, Pa.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bear Funeral Home by the Revs. C. William Fox and Richard A. Forbes Jr., with burial at Monterey Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jacob, Richard W. Jr., Richie and James Hevener, Holmes, James and Ben Stephenson and Lyle Hull.
The family will receive friends from 7-8 tonight at the funeral home.
