TWO TEENAGERS DROWN IN THE NEW RIVER
SANDSTONE - Two teenagers on a church group outing on the New River in Summers County drowned Saturday when they were caught in the river's current, according to a spokeswoman for the state police detachment in Hinton. Robin D. Akers, 16, of Grassy Meadows, Greenbrier County, and Phillip Leon Meadows, 16, of Nettie, Nicholas County, drowned at about 5:45 p.m., according to state police reports. They had been wading in shallow water in the New River when, according to witnesses, the current swept them out into deep water in a matter of seconds. Attempts to rescue them were not successful, she said. The incident was investigated by Trooper J.S. Tincher.
Akers was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses at Lilly Park in Rainelle and was and was a student at Greenbrier West High School. Surviving: parents, Robert Harold and Frances McCutcheon Akers; sisters, Tabatha Thomas of Ferrum, Va., and Jamie Akers, at home; brother, Benjamin of Mount Airy, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Dova McCutcheon of Leivasy. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with speaker Curtis Guyer officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Meadows was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses in Summersville and was a student at Richwood High School. Surviving: mother, Ruth Akers Meadows of Nettie; sisters, Drema Kay Meadows, Sarah Jane Jones, Katherine Rapp and Melissa Ann Allen, all of Summersville, Connie Jean Dennison of Nettie and Wanda Jaqueline Cummings of Beckley; grandparents, Arthur and Leona Meadows of Nettie. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with speaker Curtis Guyer officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Nettie. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

NETTIE - Phillip Leon Meadows, 16, of Nettie drown June 13, 1987 in the New River at Sandstone.
Born April 13, 1971 in Hinton, he was the son of Ruth Akers Meadows and the late Amos Leon Meadows. He was a student at Richwood High School and was a member of the Jehovah Witness Congregation of Summersville.
He was preceded in death by his father, Amos Leon Meadows.
Survivors include: his mother, Ruth Akers Meadows; 6 sisters, Dreama Kay Meadows, Sarah Jane Jones, Katherine Rapp and Melissa Ann Allen, all of Summersville, Connie Jean Dennison of Nettie, Wanda Jacqueline Cummings of Beckley; grandparents, Arthur and Leona Meadows of Nettie.
Services were held on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle with Speaker Curtis Guyer officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Nettie.
