Cleo Jackson Gill, 83, of Beckley, went home to be with the Lord and received his heavenly reward. He served his country proudly and was a good neighbor, a wonderful brother, father, grandfather, stepfather and a loving and devoted husband. He was surrounded by his family at his home when he passed away at 12:04 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2008, following a long illness.
Born at Morganette on July 2, 1924, he was the son of the late Oscar P. Gill and Ola Jones Gill.
Mr. Gill was a decorated veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and several other service medals.
Mr. Gill was a retired coal miner and construction worker, and was a member of the UMWA.
Mr. Gill was of the holiness faith and attended the Church of God Family Worship Center.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a lover of the outdoors. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 32.
Mr. Gill was preceded in death by his stepmother, Virlie Redden Gill; his first wife, Georgia Mae Wood Gill; two sons, Billy Joe Gill and Joseph Gill; two brothers, Clinton and Clayton Gill; a sister, Mildred Gill Berry; stepbrothers, Houston Redden, Russell Redden and Clayton Redden; and a stepsister, Fannie Jeffries.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lee Cadle Flippo Gill; two sons, George O. Gill and wife, Sande, of Ravenswood and Ronald L. Gill and wife, Denise, of Malvern, Ohio; daughters, Diania Lynn Moore and husband, Clarence, of Beckley, Cleo "Jackie" Sandy and husband, Mitchell, of Richwood, Della Gill of Rochester, N.Y., Rhoda Moore and husband, Johnny, of Oak Hill, DeeDee Houck and husband, John, of Beckley and Katherine Gill of Baltimore, Md.; stepchildren, Larry Flippo and wife, Lynn, of Spartanburg, S.C., and Vonda Davis and husband, Mike, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Norma Gill of Beckley; a brother, Claude Gill and wife, Ester, of Crab Orchard; stepsisters, Goldie Jeffries of Fayetteville and Litty Thompson of Lanark; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and caregivers, Robin Griffith, Audra Mastrippolito, Shelia Joyce, Tammy Harless and Evelyn Case.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Mabscott Holiness Church with the Rev. E.G. ?Buzz? Keller officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.
Pallbearers will be Joey Gill, Steve Moore, Eric Moore, Joe Lafferty, Charles Ayers, Bobby Webb and Scott Gill.
Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Oak Hill VFW Post 3110 Honor Guard.
