RAINELLE — Robert Edward Elliott, 89, of Rainelle, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at his home following a long illness.
Born March 7, 1923, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Harold and Lola Scudder Elliott. Bob was retired from the transportation industry. He served in the United States Marines during WWII, an opportunity he was very proud of. He was a member of the Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle. On moving back to Rainelle after retirement, he became active in the community, helping with the Greenbrier Hills Golf Club and working diligently on the city park that was named Bob Elliott City Park in honor of his efforts to improve the park. He was a member and former commander of the Rainelle V.F.W. Post #4484. Bob loved his family and serving others.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years in March of this year, Shirley Jordan Elliott; one daughter Theresa Joyce Clark and his sister Maxine Heaster.
Survivors include 1 son James Rodger Elliott of Rainelle; 3 daughters Janet Elliott of Virginia, Sheila Shifflett of Maryland and Cynthia White of Mt. Hope; 4 grandchildren Michael Sill of Mt. Hope, Brandi Arthur of Arizona, Justin and Jordan; and two great-granddaughters Kaitlyn Sill and Leah Arthur.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 2, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Kenneth Brackman officiating. Burial will follow in the Sewell Valley Cemetery at Rainelle.
Friends may call one hour before the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
