BIG BEND - Mr. Claude McGraw, 89, of Big Bend (Rainelle), passed away Friday evening, Nov. 16, 2007, at Heartland nursing home in Rainelle following a long illness.
Born Jan. 9, 1918, at McGraws, Wyoming County, he was the son of the late Jesse and Laura Tolliver McGraw.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Carrie M. McGraw, in February 2007.
He was a graduate of Meadow Bridge High School, Concord College and West Virginia University.
Mr. McGraw taught English and French at Nuttall High School for 42 years. He was a decorated World War II veteran, serving as a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, and had spent a few months as a German prisoner of war.
At the time of his death, Mr. McGraw was a 50-plus year Mason, having served as past master, and was also a member of the Beni Kedem Shrine Temple of Charleston. Claude and Carrie were both faithful members of Brackens Creek United Methodist Church of Russellville.
Survivors include a daughter, Claudia Harris and husband, William ?Toby? Harris, of Crawley; a sister, Bonnie McGraw of Big Bend; a brother, Bernard McGraw of Hilton Village; three grandchildren, Joel Harris and wife, Mindy, of Oak Hill, Chad Harris and wife, Heather, of Mechanicsville, Va., and Cara Crookshanks and husband, Stephen, of Smoot; and seven great-grandchildren, Tanner, Carsyn and Troy Harris of Oak Hill, Liam and Jude Harris of Mechanicsville, and Harrison and Hayden Crookshanks of Smoot.
Service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Loudermilk officiating. Entombment with military graveside rites will follow at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville. Masonic graveside rites will be conducted by Laurel Lodge No. 104 A.F. & A.M.
Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
