PHIPPS FUNERAL PLANNED TODAY FOR MT. TABOR
Aged Native Of County Succumbs To Illness Dating Back To Last December
Born Near Beckley On October 1, 1848
Member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church For Past Fifty-Three Years
Funeral services for Clarkson Phipps, 86 years old, a native of Raleigh county and one of its best known citizens, who died at his home on Reservoir Road yesterday shortly after one o'clock, will be held by Rev. J. M. Hayes, assisted by Rev. O. C. Sturgill at the Mt. Tabor church at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial in charge of Rose Funeral Home will be in Mt. Tabor cemetery. Mr. Phipps' death was attibuted to infirmities of old age, he had been ill since last December.
He was born near Beckley October 1, 1848, the son of William and Sallie Williams Phipps, the oldest of their seven children, and all of them he out-lived save one, Daniel Phipps, who resides at the old Phipps home near Mt. Tabor.
Native Of County
He lived his entire life in Raleigh county, engaging profitably in farming until his age necessitated his retirement from active work. He moved to Beckley in 1920 from his farm near Mt. Tabor, and resided here thereafter.
Mr. Phipps lived quietly, devoted himself wholly to rearing his family, gave no more attention to public matters than was necessay from the standpoint of good emrenship, minded his own affairs, and, in short, held the respect of all who knew him. For 53 years he was a member of the Mt. Tabor Baptist church, and he maintained his membership there until his death.
He was married April 20, 1874, to Eliza Margaret Lively, who survives him. She was 81 years old last Sunday, and is in excellent health for her age.
Eigh Children Living
Of the nine children born to their union, eight are living:
E. E. Phipps, of Bellepoint; H. E. Phipps, Beckley; Dr. C. E. Phipps, Charleston; G. W. Phipps, Beckley; L. W. Phipps, Cranberry; E. H. Phipps, Beckley; L. B. Phipps, Bristol, Va.; and Mrs. R. L. Allen, of Beckley. Another son I. C. Phipps, died in 1929.
Twenty-six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren are living.
