TRUCK KILLS SCHOOLBOY
Robert Munn, Mercer Pupil, Struck as He Crosses Street Near His Home; Driver Held
A 12-year-old schoolboy, Robert Munn, was fatally injured in front of his home at 1108 Lee street Friday when he was struck by a truck driven by L. C. Evans, of Charleston, an employee of a banking company.
He died without regaining consciousness after he was removed to the McMillan hospital. Doctors said he suffered a fractured skull, injuries to his chest and a broken leg, and had almost no chance of recovery.
The boy was the son of Mrs. R. W. Munn. She and a half sister, Miss Ernestine King, and three half brothers, William and Carl Lively, of Charleston, and Robert Lively, of New York, survie him.
Evans reported the accident to police and was charged with reckless driving. The charge was changed to manslaughter after the boy's death and Evans posted a $1,000 bond for his appearance in municipal court before Judge D. Boone Dawson, probably on Saturday.
Details of the accident were meager. Evans, in his report, said that the boy ran in front of the truck as he was driving past the Munn home, and that he was unable to halt the machine in time to avoid an accident.
William Lively, one of the brothers, said Robert was on his way to class at the Mercer School, near his home, when the accident occurred.
The accident occurred about 8:30 o'clock. Ten minutes later the boy was under medical care, but efforts to save him were fruitless.
The body was removed to the Barlow mortuary.
