Retired Sgt. Major Paul O. Burdette, age 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Beckley Saturday morning, June 18, 2011.
Born July 22, 1918, at Wolf Creek, WV, in Monroe County, he was a son of the late Robert Owen and Grace Jones Burdette.
He was a member of the United Methodist Temple in Beckley where he was a greeter and an usher. He was also a member of the Fred Hill Sunday School class and the Methodist Men.
He was official time keeper for boxing events and was a volunteer at Pinecrest. He was a member of the Beckley Lions Club, The Calico and Jeans Square Dance Club, Member of the Board of Directors of the Raleigh County Sheltered Workshop and the Beckley Art Group. He loved to sing old hymns. The night before his passing he sang "Oh, How I Love Jesus!" He often witnessed this truth in song.
His hobbies included horseback riding, swimming, camping, gardening, and skiing. He loved hard work.
He was a WWII and Korean War Veteran, serving 25 years in the military and retired at the rank of Sgt. Major from the U.S. Army Infantry. His assignments included Iceland, Austria, Japan, Germany and Fort Hood, Texas. His military career culminated in serving as Army Recruiter in Beckley. He went on to serve as the state manager of Modern Woodman of America Life Insurance Company. His accolades include National Top Salesman of the Year for two consecutive years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, Ralph, Norman, Alvin, Fred, Herbert, and Jesse, and a daughter-in-law, Sallie Price Burdette.
Survivors: wife of 63 years, Jeri Lipps Burdette; children, Larry Burdette and wife Susan of Beckley, WV, Danny Burdette and wife Laura of Beckley, WV, Christy Columbo of Charlotte, NC, Rob Burdette and wife Jennifer of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Brooks and Ashley Columbo and Allie and Macy Burdette; stepgrandsons, Zachary Cook and Rob Leeber; sisters, Lorene House of Wolf Creek, WV, Margaret Lipps of Florida, Ruth Olive of Texas.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple in Beckley, WV. The Service of Death and Resurrection will follow at 3 p.m. at the same location, with Pastors Chuck Pullins and Dan Johnson officiating.
Graveside service with full military honors will follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery in Richlands, WV, Greenbrier County.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of WV or to the United Methodist Temple in Beckley.
