OAK HILL ? Rev. Ray Summers McClung, 78, WV, died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV, of an apparent heart attack.
Born June 4, 1927, at Fayetteville, Fayette Co., WV, he was the son of the late Frank F. McClung and Edith Virginia Henley McClung Cahoon.
Ray began his employment for the N.R. and P Stores at Minden in 1948 and worked at other area stores as well for 10 years. In 1958 he began a 31-year career with Lance Inc. working the Oak Hill territory until his retirement in 1989.
Having received a call to preach in 1973, Rev. McClung was the former pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church at Midway for over seven years then served as pulpit supply for the Oak Hill Baptist Church for the next five years before becoming the Pastor of the Minden Missionary Baptist Church.
He also served as Chaplain for Hidden Valley Healthcare and Plateau Medical Center. He was a member of the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association, the Fayette Baptist Men?s Association and a Board member for the Fayette County Emergency Food Assistance Center.
Mr. McClung was a member of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M., Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M., and the Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 K.T.
Being interested in local history and genealogy he wrote his family genealogy, an autobiography, a book titled Baptist Beginning in Minden - 75 Year History of the Minden Baptist Church, a Minden, WV, history and a book containing a compilation of his monthly Fayette Tribune column ?Spiritual Meanderings.?
His stepfather, Earl T. Cahoon, and a brother, Bernard ?Moe? McClung, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Mae Burgess McClung, whom he married on April 3, 1953, one sister, Audrey Young of Oak Hill, WV; his twin brother, Russell McClung and wife, Polly Joe, of Fayetteville, Fayette Co., WV; and by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.
Services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Rev. David White officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with Masonic graveside rites.
