ALDERSON - Ashby Coy "Sam" Bennett, 80, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.
Born May 6, 1923, at Clintonville, he was the son of the late Wade H. and Laura Burns Bennett.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy Bennett, Ray Bennett and an infant brother.
Mr. Bennett was the retired owner and operator of Bennett's Barber Shop in Alderson, retiring after 41 years of service. He was also a retired school bus driver, having retired from the Greenbrier County Board of Education after 10-plus years of service.
Mr. Bennett was a graduate of Rupert High School and graduated from Wheeling Barber College. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Bennett was a member of Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church of Alderson, a 50-year member of Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF and AM and a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post No. 6723, Alderson. Mr. Bennett was a former chief of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department, and he was the originator of the "Alderson Proud" sign.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Verna "Pat" Beitz Bennett; a son, George S. Bennett of Lewisburg; a daughter, Lisa Humphreys and husband, Thomas H., of New Carlisle, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Lobban Funeral Home Chapel, Alderson, with the Revs. Sam Groves and Phil Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.
Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers and conducting Masonic graveside rites will be the members of Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF and AM.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Adkins, Jesse Kirby, Jack Carden and Jim Eskins.
