Thelma Grace Cavendish Cantley, 86, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004.
The only child of Wyatte and Grace Cummings Cavendish, she was born near Gauley Bridge in 1918 but grew up in Skelton where her father was an official for the New River Co. She attended Raleigh County schools and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1935. Later she earned A.B. and Master's degrees from Marshall University in elementary education. She spent 39 years teaching in Fayette and Raleigh County elementary schools.
Both Thelma and Eustace Cantley were charter members of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Shady Spring. For several years they lived at Flat Top Lake, but following retirement from Raleigh County Schools they also spent time in Louisville, Ky., and Lake Worth, Fla.
Her husband of 54 years, Eustace Glen Cantley, preceded her in death in 1995 after retiring as assistant principal at Marsh Fork High School.
Thelma is survived by five children, Glen "Ike," Byron "Ron," and Steve, all of Lake Worth; daughter Mary-Jo Broyles and husband, Joe, and grandchildren, Kyle Broyles and Stephanie Woerner, of Louisville; and Cyntha Susan "Susie" Sayre and husband, Kin, and grandchildren, Grace and McKinley Sayre, of Beckley, and Thomas Sayre of Atlanta, Ga.
Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley. Interment will be held at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
