Discharged Company E, 27th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 01 November 1861 The Greenbrier Independent, Volume XXXII, No. 48, Thursday Evening, April 21, 1898 Death of Capt. Crane It is with much sorrow that we learn of the death of Capt. Joseph S. Crane, which occurred, as we learned from our Meadow Bluff correspondent, at the home of Mrs. Hines, on Mill Creek, near Rupert's, last Sunday, the 17th instant. Capt. Crane was a native of Baltimore, Md., and the last of the immediate family of the late Joseph Crane, who moved from Maryland to this county many years ago. When a young man, Capt. Crane served for about three years in the United States navy, and visited, during this time, many parts of the world. He was a Captain in the State militia here in Greenbrier, prior to the late war, and thus got the title of Captain. When the war between the States broke out, he volunteered in the first company that left the county under command of the late Capt. Rob't F. Dennis. Capt. Crane was a printer by trade, and at one time edited the Era published here in Lewisburg. He worked for some years on the INDEPENDENT and during the summer season did the job printing at the White Sulphur Springs. The Captain was charitable and generous to a fault, giving away all he ever made to relatives and friends. He never married, and was about 79 years of age. His body was laid to rest in the burying ground at Amwell Church, beside his brother, Edward, who died about twelve years ago. The Monroe Watchman On Apr. 17, 1898, at home of Mrs. Hines, near Rupert's, Grbr. Co., Capt. Jos. S. Crane, aged about 79 yrs. Deceases was good Confederate soldier, generous/kindly man.
