- Athelene Mae Blagg Helmick, age 95 passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015 in Bridgeport, WV.
She was born December 12, 1919 in Newville, WV, the youngest daughter of Henry Hayes and Rachel Jae Pullin Blagg. She is preceded in death by her parents; was married on February 14, 1942 to Austin Robert Helmick, who passed away in 2001; 3 brothers, Vaughn Blagg, Raymond Blagg and Henry Blagg; 4 sisters, Mary Johnson, Bealah Rhea, Lula Cunningham and Trecie Beamer and one niece raised as a sister, Pauline Westfall.
Athelene is survived by 3 children, Lenora Helmick Riley Morgan and husband John Robert Morgan of Wilmington, NC, Loretta Helmick Pernell and husband Robert Pernell of Salem, WV and Aaron Austin Helmick and wife Mary Beth Nicholson Helmick of Bridgeport; 4 grandchildren, Shannon Riley, George Riley and wife Marie, Robert Pernell and wife Kelly and Erica James and husband Brian; step-granddaughter, Taylor Marie Chism, 6 great-grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Pernell and fianc Randy Beard, Tori Pernell, Todd Austin Pernell, Eric Pernell, Christian James and Bram James; great great-grandson, Cooper Beard; sister-in-law, Alice Blagg of Salem; 2 brothers-in-law, Harvey Helmick and wife Shirley of Paden City, WV and Bill Helmick and wife Anna of Cummins, GA and many nieces and nephews.
She spent her early years in Greenhill, WV and Ireland, WV and in 1960 moved to Salem, WV. During her later years, she spent the winters in Melbourne, FL and summers in Salem. She was a Methodist and a member of the former Greenhill United Methodist Church. She worked at Salem College in the 60''s and retired as a decorator for Harglo Glass Company in Salem. Athelene was a devoted wife and loving mother, who enjoyed needle arts and cooking for family and friends.
The family extends their deep appreciation for the loving care provided by Meadowview Manor and their staff in Bridgeport, WV.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Alkire Funeral Chapel in Ireland, WV and again on Wednesday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. She will be moved Wednesday, April 1, 2015 to the Greenhill Church for funeral services beginning at 1:00 pm with the Rev. Paul Boyles officiating. Interment will follow in the Greenhill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Greenhill Memorial Cemetery Fund, c/o Nellie Lowther, 44 Maggie Drive, Walkersville, WV 26447.
