Six County War Dead To be Buried Sunday
Raleigh County American Legion Post 32 will be in charge of six burial services Sunday for veterans killed overseas in the recent war.
Two sets of brothers are among the six veterans for which services will be held.
J. A. Thompson, Post 32 chaplain, appealed to Legionnaires to aid in the services for their fellow veterans.
The six veterans are Pvt. Frank E. Bryant, 20, and Sgt. Floyd E. Bryant, Jr., 22, brothers from Helen; Private First Class Connie M. Bilbrey, 27, and Pfc. Hollis E. Bilbrey, 25, Glen Rogers brothers; Sgt. Jack D. Canaday, 23, of Crab Orchard; and Pfc. Harold V. Haley, 22 of Glen Daniel…
Pfc. Haley was killed Dec. 25, 1944, while serving with the 95th division of the Third army in Germany. He was born on May 19, 1922, in Long Branch, the son of Minnie Haley Lucas and the late Henry Virgil Haley. He attended Woodrow Wilson high school.
He is survived by his mother; one sister, Mrs. Goldie McGown, Mr. Hope; five half sisters, Mrs. Nora Berry, Beckley, Mrs. Cary Worrell, Crab Orchard, Mrs. Virginia Phipps, Meadow Bluff, Mrs. Ethel Berry, Fire Creek, and Mrs. Minnie Acord, Glen White; and one half brother, John Haley, Beckley.
The body arrived in Beckley at the Calfee Funeral home Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, at the Mt. Tabor Baptist church, with the Rev. B. C. Jennings officiating. Interment will be made in the Calfee cemetery.
