RAINELLE — Constance 'Connie' Walkup May, 81, passed away on Tuesday evening, Sept. 27, 2011, at her home, after an extended illness, with her loving family by her side.
Born Sept. 27, 1930, at Quinwood, she was the eldest daughter of the late Lacy and Violet Osborne Walkup.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her grandparents, John and Ina Black Osborne, and Mr. and Mrs. Park Walkup, mother and father-in-law, Jesse and Florence Boggs May; sister, Ashton Arlene Walkup, daughter-in-law, Stormy Kennedy May; a special sister-in-law, Wanda Jean Lightfoot, and Connie's loving son, Russell (Rusty) May on June 17, 2010, following a long battle with cancer.
She was a longtime and faithful member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church and the Ladies Circle, until her illness. She was a 1948 graduate of Rupert High School. Connie was also a charter member of the Rainelle Firemanettes, and the Meadow River Garden Club of Rainelle. She loved to cook, do arts and crafts and loved caring for her family.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Herbert (Herb) May Sr. whom she married June 19, 1950; a son, Herbert May Jr. of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Cheryl L. Bland and husband, Brian of Meadow Bluff, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Shane May (Amanda) of Apopka, Fla., Erica Lynn May of Columbia, S.C., Joshua (Josh) Reynolds (Savannah) of Morgantown, W.Va., Matthew (Matt) May of Mt. Hope, W.Va., Tiler Lee Bland of Meadow Bluff, W.Va.; great-grandson, Bryson Storm May of Apopka, Fla.; three sisters, Ina C. DeLong (Jim) of Rainelle, Glenda Willard (Charles) of Iuka, Miss. and Sandra Williams (Richard) of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Leighton Walkup (Dorothy) of Marietta, Ga. and Lowell Walkup (Helen) of Troy, Ohio.
Thanks to the many, many friends and family for all the love and prayers, cards, visits, and food for Connie and Rusty, during their illnesses. Would also like to thank all the area churches that have prayed so many prayers during her illness.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at Sewell Valley Baptist Church in Rainelle, with Pastor Fred Fryar and Pastor Mike Whisman officiating, with prayer to be offered by Kenneth Brackman. Entombment will follow at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville, W.Va.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Friday evening at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle.
Pallbearers will be Shane May, Matthew May, Joshua Reynolds, Tiler Bland, C.E. "Sonny" Stroud, Jr. and Paul Rudd. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Morris, Carl "PeeWee" Morris, John Allen Lightfoot, and Danny Holsinger.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations of sympathy be made in Connie's name to: Home Care Plus, Rt. 2, Box 169-G, Lewisburg, WV 24901, or Kanawha Hospice Care, 223 Maplewood Ave., Lewisburg, W.Va. 24901.
