A Roanoke County teenager died Monday from injuries he received when he was in a car accident last week.

AUTO DEALER, MISSING YEAR, RETURNS HOME

Oaklander Hunted Since Christmas Morning, 1922, Suddenly Turns Up in Wife's Boudoir

Carl K. Shumate, Oakland motor car dealer, who kissed his wife goodbye on Christmas morning, 1922, and disappeared, is home. His wife informed the Oakland police that when she awakened yesterday morning she found her missing spouse in her bedroom. To her inquiries as to where he had been, Mrs. Shumate said her husband replied: "I have just been wandering around."

The eternal triangle was the cause of it all and, according to Mrs. Shumate, it was her husband's Southern chivalry which caused him to leave, rather than face her with the story of how he had made love to pretty Miss Mae Clark, 5928 Telegraph av., Oakland, and asked her to marry him, representing himself as a single man.

Shortly after his disappearance Shumate's automobile was found abandoned in the mud flats at Market and Isabel sts., Oakland.

During the year of his absence Mrs. Shumate has investigated all of the unidentified bodies found by the police which gave any indication of resembling her husband.

Shumate appeared to be seriously ill, and when questioned by his wife as to where he had been and what he had been doing could give no answer except, "I have just been wandering around, and now I've come home."

He told of having clothes in Stockton, according to Mrs. Shumate, and she believes that he has been living there for at least part of the time.

As to the other girl, Mrs. Shumate says that the other girl is forgotten, and added that she did not take much stock in the story at any time.

Mrs. Shumate attributed his action to a lapse of memory, but stated that he had recovered sufficiently to remember having left some of his belongings in Stockton. Shumate left for Stockton late yesterday to get his belongings.

Samuel Robert Wyzenbeek Jr. peacefully passed on at the age of 91 on March 16, 2013, after a 25 year battle with cancer. But for that, his mind was still sharp and would surely have made the century mark.

Bob was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1921 and his family moved to Los Angeles the next year, where he lived through high school and two years at UCLA before joining the Navy in 1942. Bob's lifelong passion was aviation. He flew for 60 years and was in the air flying an open cockpit biplane out of what is now LAX when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was a commander of a PBM flying boat patrol aircraft squadron off the Atlantic coast during WWII, and flew 'Mats' flights during the Korean conflict. After 17 'good years' in the Navy, but still in the naval reserves, he joined Pan American Air Lines to keep his family from constantly moving. Bob worked for Boeing in Seattle before joining Continental Air Line as executive vice president of sales and corporate planning, as well as president of Air Micronesia, a subsidiary of Continental. He left there at age 62 after the company was sold. He then consulted for Federal Express to help them maximize their air transport services before retiring. Bob and his wife enjoyed 30 years of global travel and flying his Cessna 180 float plane around Canada where he had a summer home, and spending time with his extended family. He was preceded in death by Marion, his wife of 68 years, and is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bob was a self-made man of strong conviction whose word was his bond. He taught his family, and imparted to his many friends that 'no one can take away your integrity, your knowledge or your experience'. He was respected and loved, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Remembrance Party, June 29, 2013, Bob Wyzenbeek, 17616 S.E. 292nd Place, Kent Wash. 98042.

Born on December 13, 1931, in Elverton, he was the only child of the late Ules and Margaret Ruth Forren Maples.

Elwood was a member of the Gatewood Baptist Church. He graduated from Ansted High School in 1949. He was a proud U.S. Marine, having served in the Korean War. He was a past commander and 50-year member of American Legion Post 149, a past commander of American Legion District 7 and a former member of Lafayette Masonic Lodge 57 and Scottish Rite Bodies. Just a few years ago, he even hopped a train, just to see if he could still do it. Elwood will long be remembered for his story telling. He was much loved and will be forever in our hearts.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Betty Skaggs Maples of Oak Hill; a son, Ed Maples and wife, Monica, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and two daughters, Sue and husband, Melvin Smith, and Joetta and husband, John Haggerty, all of Fayetteville. In a high noon ceremony yesterday in Burlington, N.C., Miss Louise Anderson Atwater, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Anderson Atwater, became the bride of Joseph Charles Gould, son of Brig. Gen. and Mrs. M. Joseph Gould, of Clearwater. The Rev. Walter C. Ball officiated at the rites at Front Street Methodist Church.

Floor baskets of white gladioli and pompons, and altar vases of the same flowers and ferns, in background of Kentia palms provided the decorations. Mrs. Chester Alexander, organist, and James Chamblee, vocalist, presented a program of wedding music.

Miss Audrey Allen, of Coral Gables, attended as maid of honor. Bridesmaids were the Misses Jane Elder and Patricia Gordon, both of Burlington. All wore dresses of sapphire blue, in pure silk crystalette, made with draped bodlces and fall skirts. They carried colonial nosepays of white roses and carnations, with blue delphinium and white gypsophilis.

THREE DEAD, SHOT BY MEN IN HIDING

Kentucky Officer Killed While Attempting to Arrest Women in Lee County.
[Special to The Times-Dispatch.]

Middlesboro, Ky., October 3. - James Collins and his two sons, Owen and Sam, were killed this morning at Gibson Station, Va., from ambush, while attempting to serve a subpoena on Jennie Denny, and a asother [sic] woman, wanted as witnesses in the Pineville, Belle county, Kentucky Circuit Court to testify in connection with the murder of Denny Case on Clear Creek, Belle county, six months ago.

James Collins and his two sons lived in Middlesboro, Ky., and are deputy sheriffs of Belle county. Yesterday morning they went to Shawnee, Tenn., where they met W. J. Tucker, sheriff of Lee county, Va., his son and two other men. The women had been located by Sheriff Tucker, of Lee county, and the trio went to Gibson Station last night, about two miles from where the women were hiding. This morning they arose at 4 o'clock, and made their way through the hills to the isolated building.

Collins and his two sons, with the two Lee county deputies, were stationed on the outside of the house while Sheriq Tucker [sic] and his sons broke down the door, and rushed into the house. The women screamed and from every hillside shot poured upon the officers. Sam Collins and Owen Collins were instantly killed, and the father, James Collins, fatally wounded, but he and the two Lee county deputies took refuge in the house, where the elder Collins died a few hours later.

Sheriff Tucker, his son and deputy stayed in the house for some time atter the women had made their escape, fearing to venture out, but soon as it was light enough they made their escape, expecting to be shot every moment.

It is not known who did the shooting, but the officers say they have a clue.

Sheriff Tucker was In Middlesboro today, in conference with Belle county, Ky., officers, and is much excited over his narrow escape. The Belle county, Ky., and Virginia officers are making every effort to find out who the bushwhackers are. It is expected a number of arrests will be made. The women are wanted to testify against Charles Denny, accused of murder several months ago.

Deputy Sheriff Oland Collins
Bell County Sheriff's Department, Kentucky

End of Watch Tuesday, October 3, 1911

Deputy Oland Collins and Deputy Sam Collins were shot and killed in Lee County, Virginia, as they attempted to serve a warrant on a subject wanted as a witness in a murder trial.

The deputies, accompanied by the Bell County sheriff and the Lee County sheriff, had gone to the woman's home at Gibson Station, Virginia, in order to return her to Kentucky. When the posse was refused entry into the home they attempted to force their way in, but the occupants opened fire.

Witnesses said a 13-year-old boy fired the fatal shots but his father took the blame, was convicted of murder, and sentenced to life on February 12, 1912.

Both deputies, who were brothers, were killed and the Lee County sheriff was wounded.

FOR JESSIE MORRISON

Friends in Braxton, W. Va., Rejoice Over Her Pardon

Friends of Miss Jessie Morrison, living in Braxton, W. Va., express the hope that the prisoner recently paroled from the penitentiary by Governor Stubbs, will return to her former home for a visit, according to word received at the governor's office. They always have been loath to attach blame to Miss Morrison for the killing of Mrs. Olin Castle, and have expressed congratulations over the action of the Kansas executive in setting her free.

Morgan H. Morrison, the father of Miss Morrison, now lives in El Reno, Okla., where his daughter will go to visit him after departing Excelsior Springs, Mo., where she is staying with a sister, Mrs. Hawley. Morrison formerly was sheriff of Braxton county, W. Va. The friends of Miss Morrison in Braxton feel that the appeal of their townsman, A. W. Corley, who last winter visited Governor Stubbs in the behalf of Miss Morrison, had something to do in obtaining her release.
