CHARMCO - Romie E. "Sweat Bee" Mace, 68, of Charmco, Greenbrier County, was dead on arrival Sunday at Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

He was a routeman for Beckley Newspapers.

He was a retired miner and Protestant.

TWO TEENAGERS DROWN IN THE NEW RIVER

SANDSTONE - Two teenagers on a church group outing on the New River in Summers County drowned Saturday when they were caught in the river's current, according to a spokeswoman for the state police detachment in Hinton. Robin D. Akers, 16, of Grassy Meadows, Greenbrier County, and Phillip Leon Meadows, 16, of Nettie, Nicholas County, drowned at about 5:45 p.m., according to state police reports. They had been wading in shallow water in the New River when, according to witnesses, the current swept them out into deep water in a matter of seconds. Attempts to rescue them were not successful, she said. The incident was investigated by Trooper J.S. Tincher.

Akers was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses at Lilly Park in Rainelle and was and was a student at Greenbrier West High School. Surviving: parents, Robert Harold and Frances McCutcheon Akers; sisters, Tabatha Thomas of Ferrum, Va., and Jamie Akers, at home; brother, Benjamin of Mount Airy, N.C.; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Dova McCutcheon of Leivasy. NETTIE - Phillip Leon Meadows, 16, of Nettie drown June 13, 1987 in the New River at Sandstone.

Born April 13, 1971 in Hinton, he was the son of Ruth Akers Meadows and the late Amos Leon Meadows. He was a student at Richwood High School and was a member of the Jehovah Witness Congregation of Summersville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Amos Leon Meadows.

Survivors include: his mother, Ruth Akers Meadows; 6 sisters, Dreama Kay Meadows, Sarah Jane Jones, Katherine Rapp and Melissa Ann Allen, all of Summersville, Connie Jean Dennison of Nettie, Wanda Jacqueline Cummings of Beckley; grandparents, Arthur and Leona Meadows of Nettie.

Services were held on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle with Speaker Curtis Guyer officiating. Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery at Nettie.

KINGWOOD - Patria Annett McClung Juergens Kercheval, 97, of Kingwood passed away Oct. 28, 2003, at Preston Memorial Hospital, Kingwood.

Born Oct. 6, 1906, in Phillips Run, Nicholas County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Florence Rader McClung. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Henry L. Juergens, in 1937; her second husband, Dr. Phra E. Kercheval on Nov. 22, 2002; two sisters, Madge Nuce and Carrie Morgan; and one brother, Arnett McClung.

She was a graduate of Fairmont State College and worked as an elementary teacher in Mount Morris, Pa., and Monongalia County, and retired from the Preston County school system in 1972. She was a member of the Preston County Reading Council, the Classroom Teachers Association, the Preston County Education Association, the Retired School Employees, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Wesley United Methodist Church and the Wesley United Methodist Women. She was a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 127.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara A. Kercheval of Fort Myers, Fla.; one son and daughter-in-law, Phra E. Jr. and Linda G. Kercheval of Warren, Ark.; three grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda K. Brown of Memphis, Tenn., Kenneth P. and Karen Kercheval of Jackson, Tenn., Bradley K. and Tonya Kercheval of Olive Branch, Miss.; eight great-grandchildren, Rex J. and Hadley K. Brown of Memphis, Alexis C., Jackson Phra and Caroline Grace Kercheval of Jackson, Logan Ryan, Brett and Spenser Cole Kercheval of Olive Branch; three nieces, JoAnn Fisher of Lady Lake, Fla., Claire Scheiler of Baltimore, Md., Jean Shockey of Glen Arms, Md.; five nephews, Dr. Ralph H. Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at Rotruck-Lobb Funeral Home, 295 South Price St., Kingwood, with the Rev. John Negley and the Rev. Paul Mateer officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, Kingwood.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and one hour prior to service Saturday at the funeral home, where the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 127 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Friday.

ATV crash kills Roane teen

ORMA - A Roane County teen-ager died Tuesday from injuries received a week earlier in an all-terrain vehicle accident outside Orma.

Amanda Leann Hunt, 17, of Spencer was riding on the back of the ATV driven by Jason Conrad, 18, of Orma at about 2 a.m. May 6, according to police.

Conrad lost control of the vehicle on Euclid-Nicut Road and ran off the road. Conrad received lacerations and a broken ankle. Hunt died from head injuries.

A spokesman for the Calhoun County Sheriff's Department said Conrad admitted he had two beers before driving the vehicle. An investigation of the incident is continuing.

Hunt was a student at Calhoun County High School and was a Protestant.

Lindsey Nicole Raines, 19, of Rainelle, passed away on Dec. 12, 2006, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a sudden illness.

Born April 6, 1987, in Low Moor, Va., she was the loving daughter of Paul and Vicky Raines, also of Rainelle.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, F.E. ?Gene? Nelson and her paternal grandmother, Norma K. Raines, both of Rainelle.

In addition to her parents, survivors include her maternal grandmother, Ruby Nelson; uncles, F. E. ?Sonny? Nelson of Covington, Va., Gary Nelson and wife, Carolyn, of McAllister, Okla.; one aunt, Susan Gwinn and her husband, Gary, of Rainelle; and cousins, Cher Johnson of Troutville, Va., and Cody Nelson of McAllister, Okla. Lindsey was recently engaged to Jamey P. Walker of Lookout and had begun making preparations for their happy life together. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Employed since 2004 at New River Gorge Harley-Davidson, she was also a student in the nursing program at Mountain State University.

Lindsey had many interests and hobbies including a great love of animals, the outdoors, and riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle with her fiancé who will be completely lost without her.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, with the Reverend Bennie Kenney officiating. Burial will follow at the Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

James E. Broughman, 78, of Nitro died Nov. 12, 2003, in CAMC General Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora Britt Ivaldi; and stepfather, Ettore Ivaldi.

James was a 35-year resident of Nitro and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Nitro. He was a retired manager from Kroger Company with over 50 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Mary F. Lilly Broughman at home; daughter, Linda Templeton of Merrillville, Ind.; and granddaughter, Stacey Lynn Templeton of Indianapolis, Ind.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14, at First Presbyterian Church of Nitro, 21st Street, Nitro, with the Rev. Ed Thompson officiating. Entombment will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park Mausoleum, St. Albans.

Dale Ervin "Bud" Lewis, 63, of Summer-sville, was called home to be with the Lord Thursday, January 8, 2015. He was the son of Zelda Marie Kennen Lewis of Mt. Lookout and the late Delbert Walace Lewis, Sr. and was born at Summersville, January 3, 1952. He was a construction worker and Missionary Baptist by faith.

Surviving in addition to his mother; Bud was the beloved husband of Denise Taylor Lewis; father of Mike (Jennifer); proud grandfather to Izabella and Christopher; brother to Frances (Bruce), Della (Howard), Anthony (Linda), Wilma (Ralph), Delbert (Betty), Ella (David), John (Trena) and the late Delma Jean Lewis.

The family would like to thank everyone who helped in caring for our beloved Bud.

In honor of his wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Rev. James Hylbert McClung died January 17, 2012, at the age of 88, following a long illness. He was born in Hurricane, but grew up in Greenbrier County.

He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a pastor for over 30 years, serving Baptist churches in West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. Prior to entering fulltime ministry, he was employed by United Fuel Gas Company and the U.S. Postal Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Emory McClung and his wife, Anna Blanche Smith McClung; brothers, Curtis, Dallas, Joe, Roland and Connie McClung; sisters, Hulda, Omega, Ruth, Harriett and Janet; and a daughter, Doris Ann McClung.

Surviving are his wife of 68 years, June H. McClung; four sons, Michael (Pam) McClung of Frame, Daniel Joe (Dianne) McClung of Frame, Curtis Earl (Traci) McClung of Wiersdale, Fla., and Charles Mark (Karen) McClung of Pinch; sisters, Helen Kvitky and Polly Murdoch; seven grandsons; two granddaughters; nine great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; and two great-great-granddaughters.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 21, at Hafer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lee Swor officiating. Burial will be in Old Amwell Cemetery, Crawley with Pastor Roy Huffman officiating.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 20, at Hafer Funeral Home.

She was the daughter of the late Warren M. and Estelle E. Crowley Ervin. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Jean Trimble; brother, Warren Ervin Jr.; and grandson, Daniel Paul Bird.

She is survived by: husband, John Mace of Clendenin; daughters, Cindy Bird of Clendenin and Shea Cantabery of Easton, Pa.; grandchildren, Emily Mullins, Molley Bird and John and Abby Cantabery; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Harley Mullins.

Mildred G. Mangus Gillespie passed away June 14, 2007, at Marmet Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, O.P. and Dona Davis Mangus; her husband, Lowell J. Gillespie; and a sister, Marjorie Kilgore.

She is survived by her four children, Lynn Morrison, Mark Gillespie, Gene Gillespie and Neil Gillespie; five grandchildren, Scott, Melissa, David and Seth Gillespie and J.D. Morrison; four great-grandchildren; a special niece, Joy Fisher; and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was beloved by all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Millie lived most of her adult life in Belle. She graduated from Sissonville High School, held a B.A. from Morris Harvey College and a Masters in Education from Marshall University. She taught science for many years at Thomas Jefferson Junior High finishing her teaching career at Roosevelt Junior High.

Millie was an active member of Judson Baptist Church and taught the Lydia Class for many years. She served on many of the church boards and was active in the American Baptist Women, serving as chairperson of missions for many years.

Millie was an avid reader, an accomplished artist and photographer who chronicled many of the activities of her family, church and community. She saw great beauty in nature and loved her flowers, especially her beautiful roses.

Her love of teaching carried to many area of her life. She was never too busy to answer a child's question or help an adult with some research. She made arrangements to donate her body to the WVU School of Medicine. This gift fits and reflects her life of helping others, a teacher in life and death.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Judson Baptist Church, Belle, on Saturday, June 23, at 3 p.m. The family wishes to express special thanks to caregivers Pauline Rider, Maxine Ray, Jonna Dearman and Becky Gillespie.

Elizabeth Black King, 84, of South Charleston departed this life September 22, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

Elizabeth was a graduate of West Virginia University. She was a former Kanawha County schools English teacher. She was a member of the West Virginia Dental Auxiliary and served on the Kanawha Valley Foundation's scholarship committee.

Libby, or Dede, as she was known to her children, was an ultimate caretaker, giving her time, love and energy to provide for her mother, brother, her husband and, above all, to her children and grandchildren. Her family's welfare was her life's consuming passion and she will be missed tremendously.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Randolph D. and Lenida Rupert Black; and her two brothers, John Rupert Black, and James Black.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Samuel L. King; children, Dr. Samuel L. King II and Mary Jane Hanson of Charleston, Dr. Kristen L. King and Dr. Rick E. Survivors include two sons, Darrell Cartwright of Summersville and Darvin Cartwright of Gilboa; one daughter, Phyllis Hurt of Smyrna, Tenn.; one brother, Bill Smith of Salem, Ohio; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

It is with both sadness and gladness that we share that Ruby Ruth Gillespie Devrick of Point Pleasant passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2006. She had been a resident of Pleasant Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past 4 ½ years after suffering a debilitating stroke.

She will be missed and her life celebrated by all.

Ruby was the fifth of 12 children of the late Norbon Noel and Ella Lois Buckland Gillespie of Rainelle and a graduate of Rainelle High School. She married Cecil Devrick in 1943. She and Cecil made many job-related moves, living in Charleston, Ohio, New York, Indiana, Ontario, Canada, and Mason before making their final return to Point Pleasant.

Ruby had always been a prolific letter writer, keeping in touch with family and friends. After her husband's death in 1992 she wrote a book, How It Was Back Then, in which she described life on the farm where she grew up and told some of the family experiences.

Ruby was an avid flower gardener and talented at needlework, embroidery, candlewicking, crocheting, quilting and cooking. She loved to read and kept herself well-informed about events of the world. She also enjoyed a wide circle of friends.

Ruby was always involved in church life wherever she lived. She taught Sunday school, sang in church choirs and was active in the American Baptist Women's Ministries. Ruby was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and helped with the prayer circle.

Ruby was also a member of the Mason County Chapter of AARP and a mailbox member of the Mason County CEOS Clubs.

Ruby is survived by two children, Koneda Devrick of Point Pleasant and Ron Devrick and wife, June, of Danville, Kentucky. She had two grandchildren, Aaron Devrick and wife, Heather, of Turlock, California, and Jill Utterback and husband, Mark, of Aurora. She also had one great-grandson, Quintin Edward Utterback of Aurora.

She is also survived by a brother, C.H. ?Clarence? Gillespie and wife, Frances, of Berea, Kentucky; and sisters, Vergie G. Spiker of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and the Rev. Rachel Lee and husband, Rev. Alvin Lee of Germantown, Ohio. Also surviving are several sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews, including locally, Lowell and Terri Gillespie of Leon, West Virginia.

Visitation will be held at from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the funeral home with Dr. Richard Sargent officiating. Burial will follow in Kirkland Memorial Gardens beside Cecil, her husband of 49 years.

Roger Dean Griffith, 85, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, following a short illness.

He was born Jan. 26, 1921, in Bluffton, Ohio, and grew up in Logan and Beckley. He held a degree in pharmacy from West Virginia University where he was president of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He then graduated from Midshipman School at Northwestern University and served with the Navy in the Pacific Theatre. At the war's conclusion, Roger worked at Scott Brothers Pharmacy and owned Trivillian's Pharmacy for 28 years. Roger and his wife, the late Ann Griffith of the Charleston Daily Mail, traveled the world, visiting more than 37 countries. He was a member of Village Chapel Presbyterian Church, a former board member of City National Bank, was active with the Friendship Force and served on the resident association council of Edgewood Summit.

He is survived by a daughter, Carolanne Griffith (John) Roberts of Birmingham, Ala., Beth Griffith (David) Reisman of Cincinnati, Ohio; a grandson, Fletcher Haines Griffith Roberts; two granddaughters, Rachel and Sarah Reisman; and dear friend, Ruth Ellison.

A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at Edgewood Country Club.

Born Nov. 27, 1922, in Clintonville, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Forrest and Pauline Ferrell Piercy.

She was a long-time 4-H leader in Greenbrier County, and was a retired correctional officer for the Federal Reformatory for Women in Alderson, W.Va. Mildred devoted her life to her family and her church, and will forever be remembered for her enjoyment of gardening and her dedication to the family owned greenhouse.

Mildred is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gerald F. Paul was born in Scarbro, W.Va., on Nov. 18, 1934. He attended Greenbrier Military School and graduated from the University of Alabama, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Paul was retired from his own business as a manufacturers' representative.

He was a longtime member of Mountain Brook Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death, he served on the Board of Directors of Cross Creek Park.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Bishop Griffith.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Connie Burke Bishop; his daughters, Susan Williams and husband, Scott of Mountain Brook, and Marilyn Pointer and her husband, Ed, of New Orleans, La.; grandchildren, Gordon Williams, Emily Williams, Sam Williams, and Andrew Pointer and Shelby Pointer; a brother, William C. He was a retired forest ranger working in forest fire control in Fayette and Kanawha counties with 35 years' service, a member of Ansted Baptist Church, Knights of Pythias Lodge 90, Ansted Temple 45, Pythian Sisters, former commander of American Legion, Ansted, a Marine Corps veteran and assistant chief of the Ansted Fire Department.

Surviving: wife, Marilene Skaggs Bibb; sons, Tom of Oak Hill, Dean of Ansted; daughter, Kathy Woods of Charleston; mother, Dollie Bibb of Ansted; three grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Ansted, with the Rev. Roy Gene Crist and the Rev. Jack Eades officiating. Burial, with Knights of Pythias service by Lodge 90, will be in Restlawn Memory Gardens, Victor. RAINELLE - Service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday for a 53-year old Greenbrier County man who was killed Wednesday in a slate fall.

Grover Garner Hunter, of nearby Rupert, was killed at Browns Creek Coal Co. mine near Jetsville in Nicholas County.

He was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church.

Surviving are his widow, Margie; daughters, Mrs. Patricia Bika of Rupert, Mrs. Maxine Holliday of Troy, Ohio; son, Ernie at home; mother, Mrs. Mary Crane Hunter of Rupert; sisters, Mrs. Louise Corsaro of Athens, Greece, Mrs. Hattie Remley of Rupert, Mrs. Mary Deitz of Kessler; and brothers, James of Rupert, Earl of Hyattsville, Md., and Lewellyn of Hampton, Va.

Service will be at the Don Smathers Funeral Home here with the Rev. Leroy Crane and the Rev. Henry O. Loving officiating. Burial will follow in Burns Cemetery at Kieffer.
