Gladys L. Lewis, 91, of Beckley, died in a local hospital Friday, April 23, 2004, following a short illness.

Born Aug. 12, 1912, at Spra-gue, she was the daughter of the late Park Walker "P.W." and Caroline Elizabeth Cheetham McClung.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker and a member of Calloway Heights Baptist Church. She was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil R. Lewis Sr.; a son, Park Warner Lewis; three sisters, Mary Mullins, Sarah Vandall and Violet Smith; and seven brothers, Leslie, Bill, John, Emory, Alvaro, Harold and Ray McClung.

Survivors include two sons, Virgil R. Lewis Jr. and his wife, Tammy, of Daniels and Ray Lewis and his wife, Joan, of Frederick, Md.; a daughter, Violet Lynch and her husband, Jack, of Winchester, Va.; three sisters, Helen Diggs of Frederick, Cora Cochran and her husband, Archie, of Scarbro, and Gayla Dennison and her husband, Harold "Dutch," of Baltimore, Md.; 10 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Frank Lyons officiating. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Beckley.

Friends may call 11 a.m. until time of service Monday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Lewis, Jeff Lynch, Doug Wood, Chris Wood, John Crook and Steve Underwood.

Kathleen M. Rader, 78, of Beckley, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, in a Charleston hospital, following a short illness. Born Aug. 27,1923, at Amigo, she was the daughter of the late Lucian and Margaret Douglas Rutledge. Mrs. Rader was a homemaker and had been a resident of Beckley since 1961. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Rader Jr., in 1988; her daughter, Sandra Stewart, in October 2001; and three brothers and sisters. Mrs. Rader was the last surviving member of her brothers and sisters. Survivors include her three daughters, Peggy Mankin and husband, David, of Daniels, Helen Jo Blackburn and husband, Fred Jr., of Beckley and Kate Ayers and husband, George, of Beckley; eight grandchildren, Debbie Wooldridge and Scott Stewart, both of Bradley, Kelly Masters of Davidson, N.C., J.W. Mankin of Daniels, Matt Mankin of MacArthur, Jeff Blackburn of Beckley, Shannon Ayers of Barboursville and Mark Ayers of Beckley; and eight great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Vondie Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Alice Marie Haga, 84, of Crab Orchard, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, following a long illness. Born Jan. 16, 1917, at Sun, she was the daughter of the late R. and Hattie Phipps Wiseman. Mrs. Haga was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen L. Haga; four sisters, Lola Kessler, Bessie Berry, Sylvia M. Fleshman and Flossie Martin; and two brothers, Earl and Tilden Wiseman. Survivors include a special nephew, Albert Fleshman and his wife, Virginia, of Greenwood, Del. Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. CRAWLEY - Jack R. Wheeler, 78, died Friday, April 26, 2002, at home following a short illness.

Born Oct. 25, 1923, in Wayne County, he was the son of the late Frank and Effie Jackson Wheeler.

Mr. Wheeler was employed by Mod-U-Kraf Homes Inc. of Rocky Mount, Va., attended Old Stone Presbyterian Church, Lewisburg, and was a life member of the Rupert Rotary Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elouise Walkup Wheeler, on June 23, 2000; three sisters, Katherine Barker, Mabel New and Grace Mosser; and a brother, James F. Wheeler.

Survivors include a daughter, Jacquelyn Wheeler Marshall and her husband, John C., of Houston; a grandson, Thomas Wheeler Hopkins of Houston; three sisters, Goldie Snyder of Ashland, Ky., Thelma Wilkinson of Lavalette and Marguerite Williams of Ellicott City, Md.; and an aunt, Verna B. Sheppard of Crawley.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Wallace Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with Dr. Dexter Taylor officiating. Burial will be at End of the Trail Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 30 minutes before service today at the mausoleum chapel.

CRAWLEY - Elsie Murphy Crane, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Montgomery General Elderly Care following an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, Charles Harold Crane; her two daughters, Janet Tharp of Glasgow and Patricia Dengel of Woodbridge, Va.; her two grrandchildren, Melissa Buckley of Glasgow and Patrick Jorgensen of Woodbridge; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Buckley; three sisters, Edith Stanley of Princeton, Joyce Bowyers of Bluewell and Maxine Deel of Belcamp, Md.; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her two brothers, Charles Herndon Murphy Jr. of Bluewell and Donald Ray Murphy of Indiana; and her sister, Gladys Murphy Barlow of Bluewell. She was a member of Big Clear Creek Baptist Church, Rupert, where she taught Sunday school classes for over 20 years and was an active member of the American Baptist Women's Missionary Society. She also belonged to the Crawley Homemaker's Club. Service will be noon Monday at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Cedar Grove, with the Rev. John Massey officiating. NETTIE - Janet Lorraine McClung, 72, formerly of Green Valley, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 26, 2002, at home following a long illness.

Born Aug. 17, 1930, at Rupert, she was the daughter of the late Fitz Jurl and Marguerite Yoakum McClung.

She was a homemaker, loving mother and wife, a blessed Christian and a member of Orient Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret Ann McClung; and two brothers, Everette and Gene McClung.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Preston "Bill"; a daughter, Esta Jane Amick and husband, Raymond "Keith," of Leivasy, formerly of Sissonville; four sons, Donald Preston McClung and wife, Delores, of Sylvester, Ronald Michael McClung and wife, Susan, of Greensboro, N.C., William Dale McClung and wife, Judy, of Tampa, Fla., and Lloyd Dwayne McClung and wife, Debra, of Nettie; a sister, Frances Gladwell of Martinsburg; three brothers, David McClung of Martinsburg, Neal McClung of Rupert and Byrne McClung of Neillsville, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many dear and precious friends and loved ones.

Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smathers Funeral Cha-pel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Shirley Hellms officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain Cemetery, Carl. Service will conclude with the release of the White Flights.

HOMINY FALLS - Billy Joe Amick, 63, passed away Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, in Charleston Area Medical Center following a long illness.

Born Sept. 2, 1937, in Hominy Falls, he was the son of the late Tockes Joseph and Bethel Marie Pittsenbarger Amick.

Mr. Amick was a coal miner and timberman.

Born Nov. 6, 1919, in Bingham, she was a daughter of the late George Reese and Matilda Katherine Wheeler Walker. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker. She was a member of Lewisburg United Methodist Church and former member of Quinwood United Methodist Church, where she served as youth minister, children's choir director and member of the adult choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Neal Smith, in 1983; and three brothers, Leslie, Jarrell and Lonnie Walker. Survivors include a daughter, Claudia Smith of Lewisburg; a granddaughter, Krystal Spence and her husband, David, and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Olivia Spence; six sisters, Lucille Shannon and her husband, Glenn, of Rainelle, Lelia Dancy of Lewisburg, Louise Bragg and her husband, Jim, of Nettie, Beatrice Dorsey and her husband, Roy, of Nettie, Helen Bevins and her husband, Lee, of Hinesville, Ga., and Hilda Copen and her husband, Gary, of Belleglade, Fla.; and three brothers, Darrell Walker and his wife, Georgia, of Covington, Va., Bernard Walker and his wife, Barbara, of Jacksonville, N.C., and Basil Walker and his wife, Patty, of Bluefield. CORLISS ? Virginia Maxine Burr Neff, 76, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at plateau Medical Center, in Oak Hill, following a sudden illness.

Born May 14, 1930, at Corliss, she was a daughter of the late Cecil A. and Maude Walkup Burr.

Maxine was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught in Fayette County for over 30 years. She graduated from Berea College in Kentucky with her B.A. in education, and earned her MED from Western Reserve University of Cleveland, Ohio.

Survivors include her loving husband, David Neff of Corliss; a brother, Cecil A. Burr Jr. and wife, Irma Digman Burr of Columbia Station, Ohio; a sister, Nancy Joan Perry and husband, Michael W. Perry of Corliss; a niece, Nita Richings; and a nephew, Randall Wayne Burr, both of Columbia Station, Ohio.

There will be a memorial service on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lewis Community Foundation Christian Community Center at 469 Central Avenue in Oak Hill, formerly the National Guard Armory.

QUINWOOD - Hallie Pearl Boone McClung, 93, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center following a long illness.

Born March 15, 1910, at Judson, she was the daughter of the late Robert Andrew and Madora Alice Gill-Boone.

Mrs. McClung was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Quinwood.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Newlon Yoke McClung, on Jan. 19, 1994; and 15 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include three daughters, Betty L. McClung Yost and husband, Bill Jr., of Roanoke, Va., Georgia A. McClung Walker and husband, Darrell, of Covington, Va., and Dorothy L. McClung Price and husband, Charles, of Faison, N.C.; a son, Newlon Ronald McClung and wife, Joan, of Quinwood; 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 14 stepgreat-grandchildren and four stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

RUPERT ? Lawrence Remington Cohenour, 91, passed away early Tuesday morning, May 1, 2007, at his home in Rupert following a long illness.

Born April 25, 1916, he was a son of the late Lula Bell Cohenour.

Mr. Cohenour was a member of Mount Zion Primitive Baptist Church of Ronceverte, and was a retired coal miner.

Other than his mother, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Irene Crane Cohenour; a son, Paul Darrell Cohenour; and a granddaughter, Stephanie Avin Cohenour.

Survivors include his wife, Marguerite Bennett Cohenour; a daughter, Juanita Baldwin and husband, Roy, of Boones Mill, Va.; two sons, Eugene Cohenour and wife, Eleanor, of Milford, Va., and Charles Cohenour and wife, Kathy, of Manassas, Va.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Robinson was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was affiliated with Amwell Baptist Church, a former member of the Rupert Women's Club and the Rebekah Lodge No. 217 of Rainelle, did volunteer work at the hospital and was a long time member of the Midland Trail CB Club -known as "Little Shadow." She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Eliza Boothe Day; her husband, Van Buren Robinson; two sons, Teddy Wayne and Jackie Lee Robinson; a daughter, Alma Kay Robinson; three brothers, George, John and William (Billy) Day; seven sisters, Agnes, Phyllis and Lillian Day, Arby Roman, Teddy Holcomb, Audrey Taylor and May Hanna and longtime companion, Pritchard Pat Collins. CHARMCO - Ida Armstrong Burr, 86, went to be with her Lord, family and friends in Heaven on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Heartland of Rainelle. Born at Corliss on April 17, 1918, she was the eldest child of Joseph B. and Truma Sevy Armstrong. Ida was a loving and caring person and she will be sadly missed. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elson; and brothers, Howard and Lester. Before her marriage in 1943, she was an employee of Meadow River Lumber Co. Ida was a Christian and a member of Minnie Belle Baptist Church of Corliss. Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Howard, and daughter, Linda Burr, of Charmco; sisters, Ruth Beitz of Beckley, Zella Knapp and husband, Clemon, of Meadow Bluff, Betty Wright of Corliss and Beatrice Cutlip of Rupert; a sister-in-law, Janet Armstrong of Corliss; former son-in-law, Dwayne Grimmett, and his mother, Pansy, and sister, Connie, of Rainelle; and several nieces and nephews. Charles Lee ?Cisco? Phipps, age 76, slipped away in the early morning hours of July 24, 2007 in Bradenton, Fla., after a long and courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease.

Charles was born in Milburn, W.Va., to parents Clara and Enoch Phipps. His family moved to Alderson, W.Va., when he was the age of nine, where he spent many happy and also lonely years, leaving to serve in the Army/Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Charles was retired from the Air Force with a Medical Service Connected Honorable Discharge. He moved to the Northern Virginia area where he met and married Barbara Abrahams and they had two daughters, Bobbi and Lisa.

He began his 35 year career in the Heavy Hauling and Rigging Business, learning under the stewardship of Leon Abrahams/Potomac Rigging. During these years, the name ?Charlie Phipps? became a well known and respected name in the industry. His knowledge, experience, dependability, and honesty offered the opportunity to move with Charles A. Sloan/United Rigging and Hauling, Beltsville, Maryland, where he served as Executive Vice President and Operations Manager. When ask about his success, he always gave the credit to the people that worked for and with him. During this time, he was married to Ina Faye Taylor and upon his retirement, they chose to retire to Atlanta, Georgia.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Ina Faye; a brother, Robert E. Phipps, Sr. and his wife, Helen, of Martinsville, Va.; daughters, Bobbi Hyder and her husband, Pete, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Lisa Christian of Broadlands, Va., and Cheryl Dixon and her husband, Rickey, of Myakka City, Fla.; sons, George E. Taylor, Jr. of Myakka City, Fla., Walter Gary Taylor and his wife, Tina, of Mc Donough, Ga., and Eugene Taylor and his wife, Mary, of Cartersville, Ga. He also leaves nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many more extended family members and friends.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held for Charles on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson , W.Va. with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson, W.Va., where military funeral honors will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard and Gauley Bridge VFW Post 8366, Gauley Bridge, W.Va.

CLINTONVILLE - Emma Edgel Thompson Perkins, 87, passed away Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001, at Autumn Way Nursing Home, Rupert, following a long illness.

Born March 22, 1913, in Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Allen and Mary Effie Walkup Thompson.

Mrs. Perkins was a member of Sam Black United Methodist Church and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Roe Perkins Sr., in 1984; a daughter, Patricia Rowland; two sisters, Marjorie Burns and Daisy Shirkey; and four brothers, Paul A. Thompson, Fred A. Thompson, Ronald David Thompson and Charles Will-iam Thompson.

SUMMERSVILLE - William E. "Bill" McClung, 87, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2006, in the Summersville Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late William Scott and Florence Tyree McClung and was born at Canvas, Sept. 10, 1918.

He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's. During World War II, he was employed at Hercules Powder Co. in Radford, Va. After the war, he returned to Nicholas County and was employed as a bus driver for Reynolds Transportation as a Nicholas County deputy sheriff
and then for Grimes Construction. In the mid 1950's, he began a long career in the coal industry as an equipment operator, mechanic, mine superintendent and manager. After a short stint with Maust Coal & Coke, he had a 25-year association with Terry Eagle Coal Co., including serving 10 years as president of the McClung Construction Division. He concluded his career in 1983 as a manager for Land Use Corp.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Mary E. Hennessy McClung; a son, James Michael McClung; sisters, Lena Baker, Lelia Bostic and Grace Mills; and a niece, Goldie Spencer.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Shirley Hughes McClung; two sons, William E. McClung Jr. and wife, Mary Jane, and Mark McClung and wife, Fonda, all of Summersville; a daughter, Elizabeth Reynolds of Summersville; a stepdaughter, Virginia Cvetan and husband, Mike, of York, Pa.; a sister, Ruth Bailey of Radford, Va.; seven grandchildren, John Altano Jr., Tony Altano, Albert Altano, Maria Parker, Ryan McKenzie, Chelsea and Chandler McClung; eight great-grandchildren; one
great-great-grandson; two step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two nephews, Lee Roy and Paul Bostic; and a niece, Louise Adkins.

MOUNT LOOKOUT ? George Walter McClung Sr. 89, of Mount Lookout, Nicholas County, passed to his eternal home on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley.

Born Oct. 4, 1918, at Rich Creek, Fayette County, he was a son of the late Ira D. and Nora Lilly Skaggs McClung. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Sadie Mae McClung, on Nov. 22, 2004; two sons, Ronald and Donald McClung; a grandson, Jeremy Edward Ball; five brothers, Bert, Mason D., Paul J., Marvin and Theodore E. McClung; and four sisters, Russie R. Skaggs, Lottie Shelton, Jessie Deitz and Dollie McClung.

He was a loving husband, father and pa pa who always greeted you with a smile, was a member and former trustee of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church at Mount Lookout, was a retired drag line operator, was an Army veteran of World War II with a rank of tech sergeant, and he received the Bronze Star for heroic and meritorious achievement during military operations in Germany. Walter enjoyed life and was usually laughing and joking with everyone he met.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Kimberly and Timmy Ball of Fayetteville; a son and his wife, George Walter Jr. and Sherri McClung of Mount Lookout; four grandchildren, Christi and her husband, Keith McGraw, Erin McClung, Stacey McClung and Cassie Ball; and a great-grandson, William Jeremy McGraw.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Mount Lookout, with Dr. Mark McClung officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Weston.

Born July 26, 1924, at Orient Hill, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Gladys Faulkner Walkup.

Mrs. Wilt was a homemaker, a self-employed hair dresser and a graduate of Crichton High School. She attended First Baptist Church, Rainelle.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Wilt; and two brothers, Wetzel Walkup and Olice Walkup.

Survivors include a daughter, Ann Lively O'Dell and her husband, Roger, of Rupert; a grandson, Josh O'Dell and his wife, Shelia, of Smoot; a granddaughter, Kendra Lewis and her husband, Keith, of Havelock, N.C.; a great-grandson, Dylan Tyler O'Dell of Smoot; two sisters, Lucille Campbell of Summersville and Lenora Elmore of Rainelle; and a brother, Oswald Walkup of Marfrance.

Born Sept. 16, 1917, in Marfrance, he was the son of the late Barksdale and Mattie Price McClung.

Mr. McClung was a U.S. Navy veteran, a retired coal miner, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Drema Donna McClung; three sisters, Peachie Allen, Lucy Haynes, and Dorothy Smith; and five brothers, Dayton, Roscoe, Leonard, Charlie, and Alphus McClung.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Faye Williams McClung of Leslie; a daughter, Judy Bruce of Seattle, Wash.; a son, William L. McClung of Rogersville, Tenn.; a sister, Olive James of Orient Hill; a brother, Denvin McClung of Hebron, Ohio; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was born Feb. 17, 1976, in Beckley. Mr. Moore was a truck driver for K.T. Trucking of Pratt, a member of Living Waters Church and preached his first sermon at Evergreen Baptist Church, Ansted, on the second Sunday in October. MEADOW BRIDGE - Ray E. ?Flea? Crane, 55, of Meadow Bridge, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2007, at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born Aug. 30, 1952, at Elton, he was the son of Erma Crane Zickafoose of Flint, Mich.

Mr. Crane was a mechanic by trade and had worked in Lewisburg, Hinton, Meadow Bridge and in Beckley with the Courtesy Patrol. He was affiliated with both Meadow Bridge United Methodist Church and Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge.

He was preceded in death by a son, Scott Eugene Crane; a sister, Charlotte Zickafoose Cowell; and his grandparents who raised him, Loman and Marie Fleshman Crane.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 22 years, Virginia Adkins Crane; two sons, Luke and Steven Crane of Meadow Bridge; a daughter, Kimberly Crane of Meadow Bridge; two brothers, Herman and David Zickafoose, both of Flint, Mich.; a sister, Doris Zickafoose of Flint; and several nieces and nephews.

Born Dec. 2, 1921, at Dawson, she was the daughter of the late Ollie McClung Hutsenpiller and Anthony Hutsenpiller.

Mrs. Petrovic worked in the restaurant business for several years. She resided in Ohio after living in Charleston for a short time.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Ratibor Petrovic; two sisters, Lena Theresa Hutsenpiller and Mary Louise Milem; a brother, Lloyd Anthony Hutsenpiller.

Carrie was born July 15, 1921, at Meadow Bridge. She was the daughter of Omer W. and Rachel Amick McClung.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Jennings, Lile and Gale McClung; and her sisters, Dessie Jones, Audris Rader and Veva McClung.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Claude McGraw; her daughter, Claudia Harris and husband, William Harris of Rainelle; and three grandchildren, Joel Harris and wife, Mindy of Oak Hill, Chad Harris and wife, Heather of Severna Park, Md., and Cara Crookshanks and husband, Stephen of Smoot.

Her seven great-grandchildren are Tanner, Carsyn and Troy Harris of Oak Hill, Liam and Jude Harris of Severna Park, Md. and Harrison and Hayden Crookshanks of Smoot. She is survived also by several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. McGraw was a member of the Brackens Creek United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and High Country Garden Club.

She was a graduate of Nuttall High School, Class of 1939.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Mike Loudermilk officiating. Entombment will follow in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

RAINELLE - Betty Jo McClung, 73, of Lilly Park, died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 6, 2007, at her home following a short illness.

Born Aug. 12, 1934, in Kingston, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Alma Gould Lively.

She was a homemaker.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon ?Sonny? McClung, in 1991; a daughter, Tammy Adkins; two sons, Bruce McClung and Ronnie DePriest; two sisters; and a brother.

Survivors include three daughters, Connie Taylor and husband, Duke, of Loops Road, April Adkins and husband, Curtis, of Lewisburg and Wilda Posey of Rainelle; a son, Ronnie Bennett of North Carolina; a brother, David Johnson; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville, with the Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Burial will follow.

There will be no visitation.

RUPERT - Dollie Lee ?Jackie? Shafer, 86, of Rupert, passed away Sunday evening, Nov. 4, 2007, at University of Virginia Hospital at Charlottesville, Va., following a short illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1921, at Rainelle, she was a daughter of the late William Elvin and Kathryn Amanda Zopp Shafer.

Jackie was a member of Big Clear Creek Baptist Church of Rupert and a member of the Rupert Woman?s Club. She was the owner and operator of Shafer Hardware Store in Rupert for many years.

Survivors include a brother, William ?Bill? Clyde Shafer and wife, Mina, of Rupert; three nieces, Wyon Wheatley of Colonial Heights, Va., Jill Mayer and husband, Mike, of Petersburg, Va., and Billie Jean Shafer of Rupert; and two special friends, Cindy Harris and Earl Arnett.

Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Gene Kuhn officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Parthena Clay Pendry, 95, of Crab Orchard left this earthly land July 7, 2001, at 10:40 p.m. She was born to William Barrett and Penelope Milam Clay at Saulsville, March 27, 1906. She was the last surviving member of her family of three sisters and three brothers. She was the widow of Lacy W. Pendry. Parthena was a devoted member of the Bible Baptist Church of Sophia, and a former member of the Hilltop Baptist Church of Crab Orchard. She had attended Milam High School at McGraws, Wyoming County, and often told of her experiences while in school. She rode a horse to and from school so she could play basketball, and having to ride the trains when playing games away from her home school. She still enjoyed watching basketball games on television. Also, she prided in the number of jars of food she preserved from the family garden each summer. Parthena is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline "Jackie" Meadows of Crab Orchard; a son, Melvin H. Pendry and wife Joann of Beckley; five grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows and wife Brenda of Delaplane, Va., Sarita Beckett and husband Dean of Crab Orchard, Rodney Pendry and wife Crystal of Brick, N.J., Barry Pendry and wife Joy of Sandersville, Ga., and Dale Pendry and wife Patty of Valencia, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows Jr. and wife Anita of Lake Charles, La., Erica Meadows of San Diego, Calif., Jocelyn and Justine Beckett of Crab Orchard, Will Pendry of Brick, N.J., Greyson and Audra Pen-dry of Valencia, Calif., and Wil-liam Blatt of Sandersville, Ga.; great-great-grandchildren, Donald W. Meadows II and Autumn Meadows of Lake Charles, La. Also survived by her compassionate care giver for many years, Lucille Mills, and dear friend, Mary Lilly. Born June 15, 1931, in Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Belle Rudd King.

Mrs. Crookshanks was a homemaker and a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Keiffer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arvel Crookshanks; several brothers and sisters; and a great-grandchild.

Survivors include three sons, John "Rod" Crookshanks of Rupert, Ernest "Willie" Crookshanks of Keiffer and Jamie Malcomb of Rupert; two daughters, Charlene Wittebort of Rupert and Karen Crookshanks of Duo; a brother, Jim King of Crawley; a sister, Frances Carte of Rainelle; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

ORIENT HILL - Basil E. Osborne Jr., 82, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born May 2, 1922, in Greenbrier County, he was the son of the late Basil Eugene Osborne Sr. and Ada Cleo Martin Osborne.

Mr. Osborne was a retired coal mine foreman for Westmoreland Coal Co.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and a member of the Midland Trail No. 166 AF and AM Masonic Lodge.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Workman, Mildred "Tiny" Copen and Leola Jones; and a brother, Martin "Nick" Osborne.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Dillon Osborne; a daughter, Carol Dale and husband, Gary, of Orient Hill; a son, Kenneth Eugene Osborne Sr. and wife, Teresa, of Timberville, Va.; two sisters, Pauline Wiggins and Frances Corron and husband, Richard, all of Charlestown, Md.; three grandchildren, Kenneth Eugene Osborne Jr., Jeffrey Darren Osborne and Gregory Dale and wife, Misty; and a great-grandson, Garrett Bryce Dale.

KIEFFER - Harold Calvin Suttle, 65, passed away Wed-nesday, Feb. 11, 2004, in Beckley after a long illness.

Born July 23, 1938, at Kieffer, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary O'Dell Suttle.

Mr. Suttle was of the Baptist faith. He was a 1956 graduate of Rupert High School and served several years in the U.S. Army. He was a painter, working for several years in Northern Virginia, and then he moved back home where he painted locally until 2002.

Survivors include a brother, James A. Suttle and his wife, Dollie, of Rupert, and three nieces, Sandra Cole and Becky Taylor, both of Asbury, and Cynthia Loudermilk of Nallen.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with the Rev. Roger Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

CLIFTON FORGE, Va. -- Patricia Walkup Craft, 68, of 1710 Main St., Cliftonwoods Apartments, died Friday, April 8, 2005, at Alleghany Regional Hospital, Low Moor, Va.

Born Aug. 31, 1936, at Clearco, she was a daughter of Orville Haynes and Bonnie McClung Walkup.

Mrs. Craft was a retired registered nurse, having worked for the Augusta Correctional Center in Craigsville. She was a member of Longdale United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Warren Walkup.

Survivors include three daughters, Deborah C. Jeffries and husband, David, Rhonda C. Haynes and husband, Greg, and Bonnie Van Buren, all of Clifton Forge; three sons, Gene L. Craft Jr. and wife, Laura, of Vermont, and Keith M. Craft and wife, Teri, and Thomas H. Craft, all of Clifton Forge; a sister, Margie Sykes of Clintonville; 14 grandchildren; former husband, Gene L. Craft Sr.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In keeping with her wishes, her body was cremated and a memorial service was held by the family Tuesday at Longdale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Gregory officiating, assisted by the Rev. Bill Dillon.

Elaine was a loving wife and mother of seven children.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carl J. Loudermilk; three brothers, Glen, Tom and Basil Wiseman; four sisters, Mary Marshall Wiseman, Lena Mae Rymer, Nell Beery and Alice White; and a grandson, Denver Loudermilk.

MURFREESBORO, TENN. - Merril B. "Poodle" Cavendish, 93, formerly of Hico, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at a Murfreesboro, Tenn., hospital following a long illness.

Born April 15, 1909, at Ansted, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Nettie Bays Cavendish.

Mr. Cavendish retired in 1972 as principal of Ansted High School, had served in the U.S. Army and enjoyed farming.

He was also a member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church of Ansted.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Campbell Cavendish, in 1969 and two sisters.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ellen Beiletti of West Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, James B. "Jim" Cavendish of Murf-reesboro, Tenn.; a brother, Lawrence Cavendish of Beckley; and three grandchildren.

CHARLESTON -- Ryan Washington Thompson of Charleston, formerly of Rainelle, died Wednesday, June 15, 2005, at age 100.

He was the son of the late Alex R. and Mina Henley Thompson of Greenbrier County and the last of their 14 children. His sisters were Faye Jones, Annie Mann and Ruth Burr; brothers, Conrad, Wyatt, Kirtley, Howell, Maynard, Murray, Ross, Melvin, Carel and Roy.

Ryan was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Beulah Van Stavern Thompson; he was the dear father of Mary Lou (Don) Osborne of Waterford, Mich., and Carolyn (Paul) Smith of Charleston. He is survived by seven grandchildren, James Osborne, Mary Beth Scibilia, Joni Edwards, Linda Buxton, Tim Smith, Terri Lacy and Kelsey Cottrill. He has five great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Ryan, Meghan Ryan, Ryan Osborne, Jacob Osborne and Merinda Edwards; and many nieces and nephews. More than 80 relatives celebrated with him on his 100th birthday in February.

Ryan graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1925. He then graduated from Charleston School of Commerce. Ryan managed The Bank of Rainelle for more than 35 years and helped form the First State Bank and Trust of Rainelle in the 1970s where he remained on the Board of Directors until he was 90.

Mr. Thompson was a member of Rainelle United Methodist Church for 70-plus years where he served as treasurer for over 25 years. He was a charter member of the Rainelle Lions Club and was recognized for more than 70 years of service, many of them as treasurer. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge AF and AM, served on the Board of Directors of the Rainelle Medical Clinic and Western Greenbrier Development Corp. which built housing and the nursing home now known as Heartland of Rainelle.

Mr. Thompson was honored as Citizen of the Year in 1972 by the Western Greenbrier Chamber of Commerce.

The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle. Celebration of his life is 2 p.m. Saturday at Rainelle United Methodist Church with visitation one hour before the service. Interment will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rainelle United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in his memory at P.O. Box 646, Rainelle, WV 25962.

She was a member of Lookout Baptist Church at Lookout and a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira C. ?Dick? Holcomb, on April 24, 1970; a daughter, Audrey ?Jimmy? Butner; and a son, Jackie Lee Holcomb.

Survivors are three daughters, Betty Shelton of Hillsboro, N.C., Pat Nickell of Hico and Linda Carte of Cottageville; son-in-law, Wendell Butner of Evans; brother, William Greaser of Idaho Falls, Idaho; 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.

NUTTERVILLE ? Don O. Nutter, 75, passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006, following a long illness.

He was born Dec. 22, 1930, at Winona, W.Va.; he was a son of the late Delbert and Maggie McClung Nutter.

Don was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend; he will be greatly missed.

He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean Conflict, being stationed in Bomburg, Germany. He was a disabled coal miner, a member of UMWA and a member of Nutterville Apostolic Church of Nutterville.

Don was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Anderson Nutter; a granddaughter, Emily Amick; and a brother, Van Nutter.

He is survived by his wife, Elma, of 54 years; children, Jeanie and Frank Slusser, Donna Mae and Bill Pence, Kathy and Sam Boley, Sheila and Jimmy Amick, Rodney D. and Nancy Nutter, Wesley D. and Robin Nutter, Shawn and Cynthia Nutter, all of Nutterville; two sisters, Hope and Glen Orndorff of Carl, and Brenda and Mike Bicknell of Winfield, Ohio; two brothers, Dan and Betty Nutter of Canvas, and Jack and Paula Nutter of Wintersville, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

OAK HILL ? Rev. Ray Summers McClung, 78, WV, died on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at Plateau Medical Center in Oak Hill, WV, of an apparent heart attack.

Born June 4, 1927, at Fayetteville, Fayette Co., WV, he was the son of the late Frank F. McClung and Edith Virginia Henley McClung Cahoon.

Ray began his employment for the N.R. and P Stores at Minden in 1948 and worked at other area stores as well for 10 years. In 1958 he began a 31-year career with Lance Inc. working the Oak Hill territory until his retirement in 1989.

Having received a call to preach in 1973, Rev. McClung was the former pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church at Midway for over seven years then served as pulpit supply for the Oak Hill Baptist Church for the next five years before becoming the Pastor of the Minden Missionary Baptist Church.

He also served as Chaplain for Hidden Valley Healthcare and Plateau Medical Center. He was a member of the Fayette Plateau Ministerial Association, the Fayette Baptist Men?s Association and a Board member for the Fayette County Emergency Food Assistance Center.

Mr. McClung was a member of the Oak Hill Lodge No. 120 A.F. and A.M., Sewell Chapter No. 24 R.A.M., and the Mount Hope Commandery No. 22 K.T.

Being interested in local history and genealogy he wrote his family genealogy, an autobiography, a book titled Baptist Beginning in Minden - 75 Year History of the Minden Baptist Church, a Minden, WV, history and a book containing a compilation of his monthly Fayette Tribune column ?Spiritual Meanderings.?

His stepfather, Earl T. Cahoon, and a brother, Bernard ?Moe? McClung, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Mae Burgess McClung, whom he married on April 3, 1953, one sister, Audrey Young of Oak Hill, WV; his twin brother, Russell McClung and wife, Polly Joe, of Fayetteville, Fayette Co., WV; and by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. today at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, at Oak Hill Baptist Church with Rev. David White officiating. Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, with Masonic graveside rites.

HINES ? Hazel M. Turner, 93, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born Oct. 30, 1914, at Maywood (Big Sewell Mountain), she was the daughter of the late Tobie William and Daisy Simms McClung.

Besides being a homemaker, Mrs. Turner had worked in sewing plants at Richwood, Union and Rainelle, and had been a resident of Hines since 1937.

She was a former member of Big Sewell Baptist Church and moved her membership to Hines Baptist Church when it was organized in 1945. She was a charter member of Hines Baptist Church and held several offices there, including clerk for 16 1/2 years and teacher of the beginners and junior classes. She loved her church and was active in it until her health prevented her from doing so.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Turner, in 1976; an infant daughter, Mary Kathryn Turner; two sisters, Hilda McClung and Billie Carter; and three brothers, Haven, Hilbert and Leslie McClung.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Hall of Rupert and Sharon Fields and husband, Cledius, of Charlottesville, Va.; three sisters, Bernice Calkins and husband, Charles, of Baltimore, Md., and Ellenton, Fla., Thelma Lively of Rainelle and Gladys Coulter of Smoot; two granddaughters, two grandsons, four great-granddaughters, five great-grandsons and a great-great-granddaughter.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Gary Eisenman officiating. Burial will follow in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.

KIEFFER - Granville C. Hunter, 62, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at his home following a long illness.

Born April 18, 1944, at Kieffer, he was the son of the late Ray Hunter and Mildred Crookshanks Hunter of Kieffer.

Mr. Hunter was a logger and of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Garnet Gilkeson, and two brothers, Gene and Gary Hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Heaster Hunter; two daughters, Darla Hunter of Clearwater, Fla., Candy Hunter of Ronceverte; a stepdaughter, Gina Burns Knapp of Montvale, Va.; four brothers, Gilmer of Kieffer, Glen and wife, Dorothy, of Crawley, Gaynel and wife, Linda, of Kieffer and Gerald and wife, Jenny, of Crawley; four sisters, Gilda Carey and husband, Ed, of Crawley, Galena Knapp and husband, Tim, of Rupert, Gwenda Heaster and husband, Doug, of Crawley and Gala Sheppard of Kieffer; a step grandson, Jordan Taylor; a step granddaughter, Elizabeth Pike; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Burns Cemetery, Kieffer, with Pastor Charles Meadows officiating.

There will be no visitation.

MOUNT NEBO ? Emert Charlton McClung, 79, formerly of Harrisonville, Mo., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006.

Born March 23, 1927, at Quinwood, he was a son of the late Cecil and Anna Orndorff McClung.

?Brud? was a toolmaker by trade, but his love was farming. He also loved teaching Sunday school. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attended Buckhorn United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Shirley McClung, and a sister, Wilma Fleener.

Survivors include his wife, Janie McClung; three daughters, Jan McClung of Garden City, Mo., Carmel Tabaretti of St. Albans and Debra Storz of Adams, Neb.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Leora McClung of Elkview and Celesta Swartz of Leivasy; and three brothers, Montgomery McClung of Levisay, Rannie McClung of Mount Nebo and the Rev. Tim McClung of Mount Nebo.

Service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Buckhorn United Methodist Church with Pastor Garlin Groves and Pastor Ron Crum officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery, Carl.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.
