CLENDENIN - John Henry Mace, 73, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005.

He was retired from the United States Air Force and was a member of Clendenin Advent Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Romie Elvin Mace; his wife, Phyllis Ann Mace; a brother, Leroy Mace; an infant sister, Bonnie Jean Mace; and a grandson, Daniel Paul Bird II.
He is survived by his mother, Cuma Elizabeth Osborne Mace; daughters, Catherine O'Shea Cantabery and husband, Rick of Easton, Pa., and Cynthia Jean Bird and husband, Danny "Harley" Bird, of Clendenin; sisters, Linda Hipes of Greenville, Va., and June Gladwell of Sandusky, Ohio; grandchildren, Emily Mullins, Molley Bird, John and Abby Cantabery; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Harley Mullins.

Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Matics Funeral Home, 124 First Ave., Clendenin, with Pastor Nahum Balser officiating.

Friends may call one hour before service Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave., Dunbar, WV 25064.

Interment and graveside service will be Saturday at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

CROZET, Va. - Mary Eleanor Sears, 86, of Crozet, Va., died at her residence on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, following a long illness.

Born Oct. 24, 1921, in Hominy Falls, she was the daughter of the late John Edgar and Susie McClung McCutcheon.

She retired from Con-Agra in 1989.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ohlan Nathan-iel Sears, and two sons, William Jennings Shawver and Larry Gene Sears.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Shawver Hutsenpiller of Rainelle; a son, James Ohlan Sears of Crozet, Va.; a sister, Ida Lee Viers of Quinwood; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Anderson Funeral Home in Crozet, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lois W. McCraw, 82, of Sinks Grove, died at her residence at 9:16 p.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, following an extended illness.

Born November 29, 1926, at Alderson, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Viola McClung Warren Knapp.

Mrs. McCraw was a member of the Broad Run Baptist Church at Wolf Creek. She was a 1944 graduate of Alderson High School. She was a homemaker and a highly devoted mother to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, O’Dell McCraw, in 2003; two brothers, James B. Warren and Robert Warren; two half brothers, Gerald and Junior Warren; a son-in-law, John “Eddie” Osborne; and a grandson, Michael C. Osborne.

Survivors include a daughter, Libby Osborne of Union; five sons, Tom and fiancee, Gloria, of Lexington, Va., Steve and wife, Tammy, of Lewisburg, Doug and wife, Tracy, of Lynchburg, Pat McCraw of Sinks Grove, and Kevin and wife, Lisa, of Ronceverte; one sister, Mary Bowyer of Staunton, Va.; 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services have been set for 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2, 2009, in Memorial Chapel of McCraw Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mike Ford and the Rev. Gary Baker officiating. Burial will follow in New Lebanon Cemetery at Pickaway.

Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to Kanawha HospiceCare, Inc., 223 Maplewood Ave., Lewisburg, WV 24901.

The family would like to express their deep appreciation and love to niece, Kellen Burdette, granddaughter, Debbie Hylton, Candance White, and a special thanks to Misty Porterfield, along with the HospiceCare givers.

MEADOW BRIDGE - Jessie Kathleen "Kat" Jones, 91, of Meadow Bridge, West Virginia, went to be with the Lord Saturday, May 28, 2011.

Born November 27, 1919, on Beury Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Walter D. and Lula Mae Parker Berry.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover M. Jones, in 1986; four sisters, Myrtle Harmon, Pearl Berry, Ruby Bennett, and infant sister Bula Berry; six brothers, Rev. Bill Berry, Arlie Berry, Charles Berry, Jr., Harold Berry, Sam Berry, and infant brother Grover Berry.

Kat was a member of the Meadow Bridge Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a homemaker, and worked as a housekeeper for various families.

Those left to cherish her memory are: two sons, Grover "Jimmy" Jones and wife Patty of Meadow Bridge, WV, and Beury D. "Jr." Jones and June of Meadow Bridge, WV; 3 daughters: Delores Smith and husband Jim of Clawson, MI, Thelma Jean Stickler and husband Dewey of Meadow Bridge, WV, and Zelta Martin and husband Curtis of Danese, WV; 15 grandchildren whom she loved very much, James, Jeff, Brittany, Donald, David, Robert, Anita, Greg, Dewey, Jr., Curtis, Jr., Marty, Sheri, Kathy, Melvin (BJ), and Dexter; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Berry and wife Marg of Bel Air, MD; two sisters, Mildred Harmon and Ramonia Stallard, both of Danese, West Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.

Service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with Rev. Clarence Toney and Rev. Mark Spence officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

SMOOT — Cecil Robert "Sparky" Sparks, 75, of Dougher Knob Road, Smoot, passed away Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, at his home, following an extended illness.

Born July 14, 1935, at Trout, W.Va., he was the son of the late Alex and Beatrice Armentrout Sparks. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Sims and Bertie Ann Sparks; a brother, Richard Allen Sparks, and by a son-in-law, Kerry A. Holliday, whom he loved as a son.

Mr. Sparks was a member of the Smoot Baptist Church; he was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter, a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and the North American Hunting Club.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 54 years, Freda Houchins Sparks of Smoot; two daughters, Sherry Ann Holliday of Smoot and Sharon Lee Bradley and husband, Jeff, of Crawley; six grandchildren, Robert Holliday and wife, Crisey, of Smoot, Steve Osborne and fiancée Shannon of Hines, Heath Holliday and wife, Tarra, of Smoot, Patrick Holliday and wife, Kelly, of Smoot, Kerrie Ann Weikle and husband, Ben, of Union, Tara L. Holliday and fiancé Madison of Smoot; eight great-grandchildren, Haley, Karli, Alexa, Kerry, Abigail, Seamus, Lindsey, and Cameron; two sisters, Lola Sims and husband, Roy, of Hebron, Ohio, and Phyllis Palmer and husband, Rick, of Newark, Ohio; two brothers, Roger Sparks of Clintonville and Ronald Sparks of Clintonville; very special in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews, and his special little furry friend, Pebbles.

CHARMCO — Dora Hazel Walkup Gwinn, 84, of Charmco went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 2, 2011, at home following a long illness.

Born November 10, 1926, in Richwood, she was the daughter of the late James Luther and Sarah Taylor.

Dora was a homemaker and had worked at various sewing factories. She was a member of the Orient Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Woodrow Wilson Walkup, and her second husband, Herman Gwinn; a daughter, Patricia Ann Blocher; a son, Eli Edward Walkup; and three brothers, Ralph, Ray and Roy Taylor.

Survivors include two daughters, Jean Gladwell of Rainelle and Sharon Sue Judy of Rupert; four sons, "Woody" Walkup, Jr., of Myrtle Beach, SC, Gary Walkup of Trout, James Roy Walkup, Sr., of Charmco, and Darrell Walkup of Bingham; one sister, Dorothy Hannah of Summersville; one brother, Raymond "Bud" Taylor of White Sulphur Springs; twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2011, at the Orient Hill Baptist Church with Reverend Jim Luchsinger and Reverend David Moore officiating. Burial will follow at the Orient Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

MEADOW BRIDGE — Donald Counts, 67, of Meadow Bridge, West Virginia, passed away Friday, March 2, 2012, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, WV, following a long illness.

Born May 14, 1944, at Crawley, he was the son of the late Ballard W. Counts, and Virginia G. Murphy Counts of Smoot.

Donald was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served in Vietnam. He worked as a coal miner and a mechanic.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by an infant sister and a great-granddaughter, Bella Counts.

Survivors include his wife: Juanita Louise Lowe Counts; 3 daughters: Gwen Webb (Terry), Lisa Harmon (Neal), Donna Angle (Kenny); 3 sons: Dwight Counts (Karen), Charlie Counts (Tammy), John Counts (Sonjia); 1 sister: Carolyn Browning (Russ), and sons Jason and Jared; 1 brother: Glen Counts (Sue), and son, Ricky; 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Counts (Vince) and Amber Counts, Wesley and Ashton Webb, Heather Erickson, Hailey, Elijah, and Sasha Counts, Andrew and Ava Angle; 1 great-grandson: Trey Erickson.

Kenneth Michael “Mike” Smith, 60, of Mount Hope, formerly of Danese, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, May 2, 2009.

Born December 7, 1947, at McRoss, he was the son of the late Joseph Charles Smith and Rose McClung Smith of Loops Road.

Mike was an auto mechanic. He served in the U.S. Army and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his father, Mike was preceded in death by a brother, Joe, and a sister, Evelyn.

Along with his mother, survivors include his wife, Marsha Morton Smith; a daughter, Sandra; a granddaughter, Rayleigh, all of Mount Hope; a son, Michael of Scranton, Pa.; four brothers, Jerry, Pete, Mark, and Tony Smith; a sister, Debra Kay Hicks; and a special niece, Crystal Schrader.

Mike will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Alan Keathley officiating. Burial will follow in the Wickline Cemetery at Meadow Bridge.

Anna Mae Phipps Daniels of Soak Creek, formerly of Sandlick, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2008, at her daughter?s home, Shellie Bolt, with whom she had made her home. She was 84 years of age.

Anna was born on Aug. 31, 1924, at Stover, the daughter of the late George C. and Mamie Miller Phipps. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Daniels, in 1978 and her son, Robert ?Bob? Daniels, in July of 1964. Several brothers and sisters also preceded her in death.

Anna was a homemaker and had given her heart to the Lord.

Survivors include three daughters, Shellie Bolt and Larry Bowling of Soak Creek, Sue Stone and Ted Brown and Molly Pate, all of Beckley; three sons, Charlie Daniels and his wife Mable of Harper Road, Leslie ?Dumpy? Daniels and his wife Darline of Eccles and John Daniels of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, Charlie Phipps and his wife Margie, Larry Phipps and his wife Donnie, all of Ohio, Carl Phipps of Denver, Colo., Harl Phipps of N.C.; and a sister, Margie of Ohio.

Anna was blessed with 12 grandkids, 24 great-grandkids and three great-great-grandkids; many nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Bill Prunesti officiating. Burial will follow in the Daniels Cemetery on Upper Sandlick Road.

Friends may call from noon on Saturday until the hour of the services.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

MEADOW BLUFF — Sherri Dee Baker, 48, left her earthly home on Monday, January 3, 2011, following a courageous battle with cancer since 1995.

Born on December 16, 1962, she was the eldest daughter of David and Dale Riffey of Meadow Bluff.

Sherri was a homemaker. She was proud of her CNA license, but most proud of her role as a mother. She was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church where she attended when she was able.

She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Roy and Stella Hunter and her paternal grandparents, Ross and Julia Judy, all of Meadow Bluff.

Those left to cherish her memory with her parents are her son, Adam David Roberts (Telia Jones) of White Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Amanda Rose and Autumn Lynn Canfield, both of Ronceverte; one grandson, Syler Ray Means; her brother, Greg Riffey (Anna Scruggs) of Crawley; her sister, Vivian Davies (Sean) of Bennett Mountain; her brother, Jonathan Riffey (Ashley Underwood) of Crawley; nieces and nephews, Justin, Aaron and Ryan Riffey, Taylor, Nicholas and Mikayla Davies, Nathan and Ayden Blankenship, Chad, Matt and Mirissa Underwood; her loving maternal aunts and uncle and her large extended family.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Hospice family, the many health care workers and her cancer friends.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — Todd T. McClung, 85, died March 3, 2010, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born May 20, 1924, at Hugart, W.Va., he was the son of the late Bernard and Becky (McFerrin) McClung.

He was a member of Bascom Methodist Church at Rupert and a graduate of Williamsburg High School.

Mr. McClung served two years in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was retired from the United Mine Workers of America. He was self employed and owned a landscaping business.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Hanson McClung; three brothers, Bill, Harry and Garland McClung and a sister, Margaret Simmons.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Eggleston) McClung; daughter, Brenda Cutts; son, Joseph McClung and wife, Gail; son, Sherman McClung and wife Carol; stepdaughter, Becky Terry; stepson, David Terry and wife Bev, Marvin Terry and wife Vickie. Eight grandchildren, Matthew and wife Stephanie McClung, Timmy and wife, Letty, Patrick and wife, Kalea, Chance Terry, Darrel and Amber McClung, Kimberly McClung, Amy Terry and Kimberly Brackenridge; three great-grandchildren, Harley, Megan and Michael McClung. Brother and sister-in-laws, Charles and Doris Eggleston, Junior Eggleston, Homer and Audrey Eggleston, Earl and Thelma Hanson; sisters-in-law, Maxine and Joe Sims, Madeline and Carl Cutlip and Marie Patterson.

Todd leaves behind a legacy of love and generosity. He would always go the extra mile to assist someone in need. He loved his family and enjoyed the outdoors and will be remembered for his sense of humor and loving, caring spirit.

Services will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the McCraw Funeral Home Chapel followed by burial in Wallace Memorial Cemetery.

RUPERT ? Mary B. Amick, 77, of Pocahontas Street, Rupert, W.Va., passed away Friday afternoon, May 2, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a long illness.

Born June 29, 1930, at Carl, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Burton and Lily Branchie Pittsenbarger Conard.

She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a homemaker. Mary loved spending time with her family, gardening, and listening to George Jones, her favorite country singer.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Osby Amick, in 1969; her companion, Grover Sanford, in 1981; three sisters, Maple Crocker, Joyce Anderson, and Madeline Overstreet; and her four brothers, Guy, Frank, Benton, and Billy Conard.

Mary?s family would like to acknowledge and show their appreciation for the tender and loving care given to her by her daughter, Wendi Sanford. They are also very grateful for the care shown to Mrs. Amick by her caregivers, Linda Barker and Kevin Grose.

Survivors include three daughters, Luticia Hager of Rupert, W.Va., Lisa Russell of Rupert, W.Va., and Wendi Sanford of Rupert; a son, Rodney Amick and wife Angie of Rupert; a sister, Margaret Heaster of Keiffer; five grandchildren, William and wife April, April, Logan, Isaiah, and James; and a great-grandchild, Shannon.

RUPERT - Julian W. Beitz, 81, of Anjean Road, died Monday morning, Nov. 3, 2008, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Ronceverte, following a short illness.

Born May 16, 1927, at Crawley, he was the son of the late Walter Beitz Sr. and Carma Crane Beitz.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Beitz Jr.

He was a member of the Amwell Baptist Church of Rupert, a member of the UMWA and a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Beitz had worked for 20 years in the coal mines and owned and operated Beitz Trucking Inc., doing contract work for Westvaco.

Survivors include his wife, Beatrice "Bea" M. Crookshanks Beitz of Rupert; stepson, Donald Crookshanks and wife, Betty, of Rupert; sister, Jo Ann Judy and husband, Lloyd, of Michigan; sister-in-law, Ruth Beitz of Beckley; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special cousins, Pete Piercy and Bill Suttle.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, 2008, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle, with Pastor Glen Kuhn and Pastor Charles Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

David Lee Gilkeson, 50, of Rupert, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2008, in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born on July 19, 1958, at Rupert, he was the son of the late John and Virgie Hunter Gilkeson.

David was known in the work force as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He was a member of the Smoot Baptist Church. His most important challenge and joy was raising his son, Waylon Matthew, and his daughter, "Ginnie" Virginia Marie.

Other survivors include a brother, Paul R. Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Mark Gilkeson and wife Anne of Fayetteville; a sister, Susie Kanode and husband James of Rainelle; a special cousin, Tom Patterson and wife Karen of Smoot; two uncles, Bob Gilkeson and wife Freda of Woodbridge, Va., and Charles Gilkeson and wife Sharon of Talcott; an aunt, Faye Patterson of Smoot; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services will be 3 p.m. today at Smathers Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Jim Luchsinger officiating. Burial will follow in the McElhenny Cemetery at Grassy Meadows.

DAWSON - Miller “Lee” Walkup, 87, of Dawson, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at the White Sulphur Springs Care Center following a short illness.

Born August 28, 1921, at Dawson, he was the son of the late Miller and Cleo Anderson Walkup.

Lee was an avid gardener and woodsman while he lived with his parents at Dawson. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Gladys Walkup, Dorlis Lindsay and Belva Rhodes and a brother, Alonzo Walkup.

Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Young and husband, Don of Diamondhead, Mississippi; two brothers, French Walkup and wife, Joyce “Eileen” of Spring Hill, Florida and Robert “Bob” Walkup and wife, Juanita of Canton, North Carolina. He is also survived by two nieces, 18 nephews and their families, and numerous friends.

A special thanks from the family go to all those caretakers at White Sulphur Springs Care Center who took such excellent care of Lee while he resided at their facility since March 17, 2003.

RAINELLE — Shirley Susan Jones, 51, of Rainelle, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 4, 2012 in the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center at Fairlea, following a short illness.

Born Sept. 20, 1960, at Hinton, she was the daughter of Etha Virginia Osborne Brown of Rainelle and the late William Russell Brown.

Shirley was a faithful member of the Little Sewell Baptist Church at Crag where she sang in the choir and loved her church family. She was a clerk at Foodland before its closing, cleaned for her brother's business, K & G Tires, and later helped care for her mother. Shirley was a loving, caring person who put other's needs before her own.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Jacob Brown and Mabel Brown Harris; and maternal grandparents, Daisy Neff Osborne, Andy and Nancy Mashburn Osborne.

Including her mother, survivors are her son and the joy of her life, Warren Jones of Rainelle; two brothers, Roger Brown of Rainelle and Danny Brown and wife, Cyndi of Bellwood; a half brother, Bill Brown of Crestview, Fla.; a sister, Sharon McClung and husband, Randy of Rainelle; a half sister, Mabel Boggess and husband, George of Orient Hill; and her aunt, Nancy Louise Birchfield of Covington, Va.; nephews, Sheldon Brown and wife, Andrea and Eric Brown, all of Bellwood; nieces, Megan and Chelsea Brown of Bellwood, and great-nieces, Maggie and Abigail Brown of Bellwood.

On Sunday, May 4, 2008, Marie Daniel, of Dry Hill Road, formerly of Glen Daniel, passed away in a Beckley hospital. She celebrated her 70th birthday on Saturday.

Born Ina Marie Daniel on May 3, 1938, at Glen Daniel, she was the only child and beloved daughter of the late Elmer and Estelle Pearl Lucas Daniel.

Marie spent her childhood at Glen Daniel. A graduate of Trap Hill School, Class of 1946, she attended Beckley College (Mountain State University) and graduated from Morris Harvey College (University of Charleston) with a teaching degree, and did graduate work at West Virginia University. In declining health for a number of years, Marie last taught at Mt. View Elementary. She had been a resident of Dry Hill Road since 1989.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Alfred and Bertie Richmond Lucas, and her maternal grandparents, Henry Monroe and Ina Jane Dillon Daniel.

A large extended family survives Marie.

Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Doctor Robert Stoddard officiating. Marie will be then entombed beside her parents at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the services Wednesday.

CHARMCO - Violet I. Osborne Walkup, 100, of Charmco, passed away Sunday, May 3, 2009, at The Brier Rehab Nursing Center at Ronceverte, after a short illness.

She had been a resident of The Brier for several months.

Born March 30, 1909, at Clifftop, W.Va., she was the eldest daughter of the late John S. and Ina Black Osborne.

Violet had just celebrated her 100th birthday with a celebration at the Shriners Hall in Lewisburg, with all six of her children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren attending. She was a homemaker, a member of Gordon Freewill Baptist Church and a lifelong resident of Charmco.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lacy M. Walkup, in 1989; a daughter, Ashton; four sisters, Cuma Mace, Marie Morris, Virginia Wertz and Gertrude Morton; and two brothers, John and Carl Osborne.

She is survived by four daughters, Connie May and husband, Herb, of Rainelle, Ina Claire Delong and husband, Jim, of Rainelle, Glenda Willard and husband, Charles, of Iuka, Miss., and Sandra Williams and husband, Richard, of Lakeland, Fla.; two sons, Leighton Walkup and wife, Dorothy, of Marietta, Ga., Lowell Walkup and companion, Helen Carver, of Troy, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Wallace & Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, with Pastor Milton Ker, Pastor Les Mullens and Mr. Kenneth Brackman officiating. Entombment will follow in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum, Clintonville.

SALEM, S.C. — Kathleen "Kay" Thompson, 89, passed away Sunday, May 2, 2010 in Salem, S.C., following a sudden illness.

Born January 31, 1921 in Fenwick, she was the daughter of the late George Jenkins and Angie Spinks Canfield.

Kay was a member of Big Clear Creek Baptist Church in Rupert. With exception of brief employment at the King Coal Hotel in Rainelle, she spent most of her adult life in Charmco as a wife, mother and homemaker. Kay gardened and canned, hunted and fished. She enjoyed fishing the most and often spent hours in solitude night fishing on the Meadow River near her home.

Kay moved to Lewisburg, where she lived for 10 years before going to Salem, S.C. to live with her daughter Ruby Sheets in 2009.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Fred Allen Thompson; a daughter, Gladys Marie Pitsenbarger; a son, William David Thompson; two granddaughters, Dottie Taylor and Tammy Whery; a sister, Ruth Hicks; and brothers, Guy, Carl, Earl, Virgil and Claude Canfield.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruby Sheets and husband Roger, Salem, S.C., and Joyce Daily of Clayton, N.C.; three sons, Charles Allen Thompson and wife, Eileen of Fairfax, Va., Floyd "Bud" Thompson of Charmco and Frederick Floyd Thompson and wife, Gabby Herndon, Va.; 17 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Arbutus M. Johns McClung, 85, entered the Kingdom of her Lord and Savior, Tuesday, August 4, 2009, in Stroudsburg, Pa., after a prolonged illness. She resided with her granddaughter and husband at the time of her death.

Born October 17, 1923, in Edmond, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Lola Dorsey and Luther and Isabell Johns. She was the wife of the late Carl McClung.

Surviving are her children, Greta (Bill) Huffman of Mt. Nebo, Kay (Bill) Robertson of Roanoke, Va., Nancy Altizer of Crichton, Nila Jean (Leslie) Mullens of Charmco; a son, Pat (Patty) McClung of Jacobus, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Nina (Charles) Donaldson of Nettie; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; seven stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Johns; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Huffman; two grandchildren, Scott McClung and Kimberly Huffman Patton; two sons-in-law, Joseph Altizer and Hollie Hellems; one great-grandchild, Amber Patton; one brother, Donald Johns; one sister, Bernadine Weaver; and a special Uncle, John Parkins.

In recent years, Arbutus required a great deal of love and care, which was provided by family members and care givers. Special thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Kurt Ehrenfeuchter.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 8, 2009, in the Hilltop United Methodist Church under the loving direction of her son-in-law, Pastor Leslie Mullens. Burial will be in the family cemetery at Snow Hill.

CRAWLEY — Jimmy Leon King, 77, passed away Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, in the Beckley VA Medical Center, following a long illness.

Born on Feb. 23, 1933, at Gatewood, he was the last member of the John Lloyd and Eliza Belle Rutter King family.

Jimmy was a master craftsman. He loved working with wood. He was also known in the mining industry as a coal operator in the area. He was an avid outdoorsman when he was able. Jimmy was a member of the Rainelle VFW Post No. 4484 and of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his seven brothers, Paul, Russell, Obey, Okey, John Douglas, Jackie and Arkie King, and six sisters, Hester and Ester King, Geraldine Miller, Betty Crookshanks, Frances Carte and Bonnie Crookshanks.

Born June 7, 1925, at Hughart, he was a son of the late William Carl and Ada Via Williams Patterson.

Mr. Patterson, along with his wife, was owner and operator of Fairlea Vacuum Service until August 2007. He was of the Baptist faith, was a member of Greenbrier Masonic Lodge No. 42, and was a retired heavy equipment operator and had retired from Greenbrier Recycling.

Other than his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother, Red Patterson; and a granddaughter, Joyce Faye.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Kathleen Hines Patterson; daughters, Linda Raines of Johnson City, Tenn., and Martha Jane Hicks and husband, the Rev. Jay Hicks, of Clintonville; a brother, Jimmy Dale Patterson and wife, Kay Ellen, of Conway, S.C.; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Born September 30, 1950, at Orient Hill, W.Va., she was the daughter of Dora Taylor Walkup Gwinn of Charmco, and the late Woodrow Walkup. Other than her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Murphy, and a brother, Eli Walkup.

She was a member of the Orient Hill Baptist Church, Orient Hill, and had worked at the White Oak Convalescent Home in Canton, Ohio.

She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Lones and husband Gunner, and son, Robert Blocher Jr., all of Massillon, Ohio; her mother, Dora (Walkup) Gwinn of Charmco, W.Va.; four brothers, Woodrow Walkup Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Gary Walkup of Alderson, W.Va., Jimmy Walkup of Orient Hill, W.Va., Darrell Walkup of Bingham, W.Va.; two sisters, Jean Gladwell of Rainelle, W.Va., and Sharon Judy of Rupert, W.Va.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009, at Orient Hill Baptist Church at Orient Hill, with Rev. Houston Boothe officiating. Her ashes will be buried at the Orient Hill Cemetery, following the service.

Born on January 29, 1922, at Oswald, Raleigh County, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Virginia Haley Phipps.

Mrs. Hunter was a homemaker and attended Soule United Methodist Church at Meadow Bluff. Stella blessed many with her baking and cooking.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Roy M. Hunter (January 4, 2002); 1 daughter, Alice Faye Miller; 4 brothers, Hansford, Eddie, Frank and Noah Phipps; and 6 sisters, Effie Chase, Blanch Thompson, Margie Counts, Nellie Hiser, Louise Lloyd and Gertrude Thompson; and 1 son-in-law, Bill Miller.

Survivors include 2 sons, Warren Hunter (Kay) of Meadow Bluff and Wyatt Hunter (Bonnie) of Alta; 3 daughters, Shirley King (Jim) of Crawley, Dale Riffey (David) and Diana Miller all of Meadow Bluff; 1 brother, Ulysses Phipps of Arizona; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Terry worked for Leckie Coal Company for 20 years; the West Virginia Department of Highways for nine years and was a Mason and a Shriner. He was an antique car enthusiast. Terry enjoyed hunting and fishing when he was able and he loved farming.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years Mitzi Anderson Hunter; his son Nathaniel Hunter of Rupert; his father-in-law Maynard Anderson of Caldwell; two brothers-in-law Kent Anderson of Maxwelton and Joe Anderson of Caldwell and one niece.

Robert Paul "Bob" Haley, 83, of Beckley, passed away on Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Haley was born July 26, 1920, at Tolleytown.

He was a mechanic for United States Army and was a member of the UMWA.

He was an animal lover, enjoyed spending time fishing and was a very generous and giving man.

His wife, Joan White Haley, preceded him in death in April 1998.

He is survived by two sons, Joe Haley of Shady Spring and Roger Haley of Lima, Ohio; a daughter, Sue Haley of Ohio; his children's mother, Eva Lilly and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will sadly miss him.

He will also be fondly remembered by Sissy and the staff of Sissy's Video and Tanning, whom he loved to visit.

Services will be noon Saturday at Blue Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Darrell McNeely officiating. Entombment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Mausoleum of Faith, Beckley.

Mr. Burns was a member of Sunrise Chapel United Methodist Church of Clintonville where he served as treasurer for more than 35 years. He was also a charter member of the Clintonville Ruritan Club, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a retired truck driver for the West Virginia Division of Highways.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Franklin Burns.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Jeffries Burns of Clintonville; a daughter, Joyce Copeland of Clintonville; a son, John W. "Jay" Burns of Clintonville; two granddaughters, Melody Loudermilk and Christy Estep; three great-grandchildren, Megan Estep, Justin Estep, and Jordan Loudermilk; and one stepgreat-grandson, Justin Loudermilk.

She was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Meadow Bridge, a daughter of the late William C. Rader and Isabel Law Rader. Mrs. Hughes was the owner-operator of Hughes Packette in Stanaford. She was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church. A 1941 graduate of Stoco High School, Mrs. Hughes was also a graduate of St. Genevieve College in Asheville, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, William P. Hughes, who died in 1979; a brother, William C. Rader Jr.; a sister-in-law, Kathleen Rutledge Rader; and a niece, Sandra Sue Rader Stewart. Survivors include a sister, June R. McNeely and husband, Sanford, of Mount Hope; nieces Christine McNeely Foster and husband, Fred, Peggy Rader Mankin and husband, David, Helen Jo Rader Blackburn and husband, Fred, and Katie Lee Rader Ayers and husband, George; and several great-nieces and nephews. Private service was held Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum, Beckley, with the Rev. Jerry Cook officiating. Freddie A. Shumate, 65, of Bolt, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1937, he was the son of Vallie Bailey McGraw of Beckley and the late Fred Shumate. Mr. Shumate served three years in the Marines and four years in the Air Force. He retired as assistant postmaster in Virginia. He spent many years as a long-distance trucker and also drove with Bandy Oil. He was active in the Share Program. He was a gun safety instructor and participated in fishing derbys. He was always active in community-related activities and events. He attended Bolt Church of God. Other survivors besides his mother include a sister, Phyllis York of Beckley; a son, Bryan Shumate of Richmond; a daughter, Vicky Shumate and grandson, Joseph Shumate, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and a dear friend, Jane Wickline of Daniels. Service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Bolt Church of God with Pastor Randy Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in Allen Cemetery, Bolt. Friends may call 2:30 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the church. Pallbearers will be Gary Brown, Larry Bailey, Bob Acord, Leslie Daniel, Joey Shumate, Jimmy Wickline and Mitch Bailey. DANESE - Joseph Curtis Fox Sr., 51, died Thursday, May 31, 2001, of injuries received in an automobile accident in College Town, Pa.

Born March 25, 1950, in Maplewood, he was the son of Thelma Pittsenbarger Fox of Maplewood and the late Andrew Earl Fox Sr.

Mr. Fox graduated from Meadow Bridge High School in 1968 and served in the Army National Guard for six years. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and four-wheeling. He was employed by Angelo Iafrate Construction Co. in College Town as project engineer. He worked as a surveyor and a highway construction engineer the past 30 years throughout West Virginia and surrounding states.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sadie and Freda; and a nephew, David Allen Chrisman.

Other survivors include his wife, Paula Jean Tolley Fox; his mother-in-law, Alice Tolley of Landisburg; three sons, Joseph C. "Joey" Fox Jr. and his wife, B.J., of Layland, George Fox of Mabscott and Joseph Young at home; a daughter, Terri Michele Fox Vandall and her husband, Scott, of Jane Lew; two granddaughters, Ashley and Erica Vandall; two brothers, Andrew Earl "Bob" Fox Jr. and his wife, Rose Marie, and John Fox Sr. and his wife, Anna, all of Maplewood; five sisters, Juanita Donelow and Cynthia Smith of Maplewood, Lena Ward and her husband, Todd, of Beckley, Deloris "Lorie" Maynard and her husband, Arnold, of Pax and Ruth Fleshman and her husband, Roger, of Beckley; 20 nieces, Thelma Donelow Hickman Shumate, Cynthia "Lanie" Donelow Jones, Lynda Donelow Chrisman, Cecilia Smith Crist, Becky Fleshman Elswick, Sheryl, Beverly and Melissa Fleshman, Brenda Fox, Patricia Fox Acord, Monica Fox Hogg, Vivian Fox Meadows, Diane Fox Critchley, Glenda Fox Dilly, Heather Fox, Kassandra Fox, Angela Ward Cole, Angela Maynard Long, Loretta Maynard Dover and Karen Fox Stover; 12 nephews, Johnny Fox Jr., Tim Fox, Roger Dale and Michael Fleshman, Arnie Maynard, Dwayne, Jeremy and Jonathan Ward, David, Leon-ard, Charles and William Fox; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

Service will be 11 a.m. Monday at House of Prayer, Charmco, with the Rev. Richard Barker officiating, assisted by the Rev. David Chrisman. Burial will follow in Layland Cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the church and one hour before service Monday.

Nephews serving as pallbearers will be Johnny Fox Jr., Roger Dale Fleshman Jr., Arnie Maynard, Tim Fox, Loran David Jones Jr., Kevin Jones, Jason Jones and Armic Bunch.

CHARMCO - Dr. Loraine Walkup, 49, formerly of Orient Hill, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, at home following a long illness.

Born March 19, 1953, at Quinwood, she was the daughter of the late Ray W. and Agnes Hazel Martin O'Dell.

Dr. Walkup graduated from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg. She served a two-year residency at Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio. She was a member of Orient Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, James Roy Walkup Sr.; two sons, James R. Walkup Jr. and his wife, Misty, of Quinwood and James M. Walkup of Orient Hill; a sister, Patsy Block of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, Ronnie O'Dell and Steve O'Dell, both of Columbus; and two grandchildren, James R. Walkup III and Tia Dawn Walkup.

Service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Orient Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Luchsinger officiating. Burial will follow in Orient Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.
