On Wednesday, December 29th, 2010, after a long and good life, our mother, Ruth Naomi Martin Harper of the Cranberry Community, passed away at home. A longtime resident of Upper Sandlick, she was in her 98th year.

Ruth was born on July 28th, 1912, at Hinton. Her parents were the late Granville A. Martin and Martha Daniel Martin Daniel. Her father died when she was 3 years old. Ruth's mother would marry Robert C. Daniel. The blended families would create a family of 14 children, several dying in infancy. Her siblings that lived to adulthood were brothers, Merritt and Manther Martin, Herb and George Daniel, and sisters, Panzy Tocado, Essie Dillon, and Josie Haley. They have preceded Ruth in death.

Ruth Harper was an interesting woman. The era of time when she was born and growing up prevented many people from receiving a formal education. Ruth was a "self-educated woman." An accomplished writer, she studied and read the classics and wrote numerous poems. Ruth always read her Bible. Several years ago, the late Bev Davis, writer and editor for The Register-Herald, published one of Ruth's essays in the local paper. She kept an open mind on life and was always reading and staying on top of current events that took place during her long life. Up to the month before her death, she still worked her daily crossword puzzle and her mind was keen until the end. She loved to sew. Ruth will be buried in one of her own dresses.

Ruth was married to James Mason Harper, who has preceded her in death. To this union were born three sons, Paul Harper of Mt. Hope, Roy Lee Harper and his wife Judy of Cranberry and Glen Harper and his wife Julie of Daniels.

"Granny Ruth" was blessed to have many grandchildren; they are Connie Martin and her husband Tommy, David Harper, Sirena Harper, Danny Harper and his wife, Susan, Ruth Sofield and her husband Daryl, Robert Harper, Anthony Harper and his wife, Tracey, and James Harper; she was the proud great-grandmother of Roy Brandon Harper and his wife, Jackie, Amanda Harper, Troy Lewis, Ryan Harper, Kaylyn Harper, Keith Dillon, Sydney Harper, Chase Harper, and Tristen Harper; she was the dear great-great-grandmother of Maverick Harper, and Kolton Harper. A brother, Paul Daniel, survives as well as a large extended family.

On Monday, January 3rd, at 3 p.m. we will remember the life of this great lady with a Service of Remembrance at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Pastor Gary Walker will be officiating. Ruth will then be laid to rest at the Daniel Cemetery at Upper Sandlick. The family will receive friends on Sunday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the mortuary and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Her Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

"And so grow along with me, the best is yet to be.'' For Ruth Harper, "The best was saved for last." Hers was a life well lived.

Condolences may be sent to the family's guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.

Jonathan Thomas of Rainelle went to walk with loving grandpa, H (Harry Dixon) in heaven on June 15, 2012.

Born on Oct. 25, 1981, Jonathan was a 2000 graduate of Rainelle Christian Academy and was a member of Sewell Valley Baptist Church. He was also a proud employee of UPS the "Boys in Brown".

Jonathan is preceded in death by his maternal grandpa, H.E.; paternal grandmother, Carroll (Mimie) Gibson; great paternal grandparents, Charles and Gladys Hedrick, and great maternal grandparents, Bill and Sylvia Avancini, and Harry and Gladys Dixon.

He is survived by his father and mother, Junie and Darla Thomas; his grandmother, Patsy Dixon; sister, Shena Thomas and fiancé, Jimmy Adkins; brother, Christopher M. Wright and his wife, Cindy and daughter, Keira "Monkey" Wright; fiancé, Angela Gilkerson and her daughter, Micah Gilkerson; aunts and uncles, Robert and Robin Thomas, Cindy Thomas, Buddy and Teresa Hedrick, Jeff and Lorrie Thomas, Mike and Kim Thomas, Rhonda and Wayne Pennington, along with many cousins and friends.

The easiest way to describe Jonathan is that he was simply the best at everything. He was the best kind of son, the best kind of brother, the best kind of family, and the best kind of friend. Jonathan truly loved his family and his friends, and in his eyes there was no difference between the two. If you were lucky enough to be part of Jonathan's family, there was no limit to what he would do for you, and he never expected anything in return. He had a huge heart and freely gave to others, but his generosity was unknown to most, because he always kept his giving private. He truly knew how to make the most out of life, he lived it to the fullest and enjoyed every minute of it. Whether it was four-wheeling with his buddies, going to WVU football games in the fall, bear hunting with his uncle Bob, or just giving his mawmaw, mom, dad, and sister a hard time, there was absolutely never a dull moment with Jonathan. He was always the life of the party and yet the tenderest of hearts. With that one-of-a-kind smile, mischievous laugh, and crazy sense of humor, he would make anyone laugh, even on their worst day. When you were around him you just couldn't be anything else but happy. Friday evening heaven got a little brighter while our world got a little darker. Jonathan did not leave this world alone, because when he left us, he took all of our hearts with him. Heaven truly gained a precious angel, and even though he is busy enjoying heaven with his Grandpa H, we will never stop missing him or loving him. While trying to follow the extraordinary life that Jonathan led, we live with the promise and await the day that we can see that beautiful smile, sparkling eyes and hear that precious laugh once again.

He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Pallbearers will be: Lee Dixon, Chad Burdette, Josh Workman, Dr. Chris Martin, Stephen Howard, Kip Howard, Chris Rudd and Laramie Myers.

Come join us to celebrate his life at the Sewell Valley Baptist Church on June 21, 2012, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Friday, June 22, 2012 at 1 p.m. Please wear WVU attire in honor of his love for the Mountaineers.

In lieu of flowers, donations of sympathy may be made to Rainelle Christian Academy, P.O. Box 784, Rainelle, WV 25962.

When Cody's children recall their father, they think of one expression, "A hard worker." An outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish, work on the farm and garden. He had a deep abiding love for his grandchildren.

Cody's life was not always easy. He endured the tragic loss of two sons, Gary and Jonathan Cody Daniel. In September of last year, he faced his greatest challenge, the loss of his beloved wife of 56 years, Dolores "Dodie" Daniel. They would both pass away in the same room at the Bowers Hospice House, fourteen months and six days apart. And now, "Oh, Glad Reunion."

Cody was blessed to have in his life William Rollins of Mabscott, whom his children think of as their brother. They would like to acknowledge his caregiver for the past month, David Mills. At the end of the day, Cody Daniel was a friend to many people.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating. Cody will then be laid to rest beside his two boys and his faithful Dolores at the Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
