ARBY CLINTON SIMMS, 67, OF RAINELLE died June 26, 1995, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, after a long illness. He was a former watchman for Meadow River Lumber Co., Rainelle. He was a retired coal miner from Westmoreland Coal Co. and a member of UMW Local 1335. Surviving: wife, Wanda Jean Lambert Simms; daughters, Maxine Lillian Simms McGuire of Rainelle, Connie Jean Simms Burr of Summersville, Christine Annette Simms at home; son, Charles Clinton of Covington, Va.; sisters, Virginia Rogers of Fayetteville, Erma Simms of Laurinburg, N.C.; brothers, Ernest of Hines, Lewis of Ortonville, Mich., Jesse Shelton of Flint, Mich., Eugene of Rainelle; seven grandchildren. Service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wallace Memorial Mausoleum Chapel, Clintonville, with the Rev. Mike Tincher officiating. Entombment will be in Wallace Memorial Mausoleum. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle.

Former Mayor Of Covington Dies

COVINGTON - Earl Miller Shorter, 84, died Sunday in a Covington hospital. He was a former mayor and councilman of Covington and a retired employe of Westvaco Inc.

Surviving are his wife, Lovie Crooksshankes Shorter; a son, Phillip E. Shorter, Roanoke; a daughter, Sandra E. Shorter, Covington; a brother, Gilliam W. Shorter, Eagle Rock; a sister, Mrs. Mary Sheets, Appomattox.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Real Estate Man Claimed by Death

RAINELLE, March 19. - Funeral services will be held tomorrow for George W. Hughart, real estate man, who died yesterday afternoon at his home at East Rainelle of a paralytic stroke which followed an illness of several days with pneumonia.

Rites will be held at the home at 2 p.m., with Rev. McDonald Westlake, pastor of the First Baptist church, in charge. Burial will be in Amwell cemetery at Rupert.

Surviving are three daughters, Miss Lula Hughart, Mrs. L. Altizer and Mrs. L. Judy, and two sons, James and Roy. All are of East Rainelle.

Clarence E. Callaghan, age 65, died at his home in Hudson, Florida, on April 18, 2001, of a massive heart attack.

He was born March 4, 1936, in Camden-on-Gauley.

Callaghan served 17 years in the United States Marines and was self-employed as an electrician in Morehead City, North Carolina, before his retirement in Florida. He was a life member of the VFW and Disabled Veterans. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, American Legion, Elks Lodge, and Fleet Reserve Association. He was a Baptist.

Callaghan is survived by his mother, Ruth Callaghan, of New Port Richey, Florida.

He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Callaghan, and his wife, Carol Hayslett Callaghan.
His ashes will be returned to Craigsville, where a memorial service will be held at a later date.
