Rites Conducted Friday Afternoon For Mrs. McCoy

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in his wisdom has recalled
The boon his love has given,
And though the body slumbers now
The soul is safe in Heaven.

Susan Morrison Squires, eighth daughter of Wm. G. and Maria J. Squires, was born near Salt Lick Bridge, in Braxton County, West Virginia on March 27, 1864, and passed from this life at her home in Calumet, July 9, 1946.

She was converted at the early age of seven and joined United Brethren Church in West Virginia.

On September 11, 1884, she was united in marriage to Charles Edward McCoy. To this union nine daughters were born, all of whom grew to womanhood. One daughter, Mrs. Roll Jones passed away at the age of 49 years on July 10, 1939.

In February 1907 they moved to Calumet, Oklahoma with their family, where she has since resided. Her husband passed from this life on April 8 1943.

Mrs. McCoy united with the Methodist Church the same year they moved here and was a charter member. She was a life member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. The church services were not complete unless Mrs. McCoy was sitting in her usual place. Very few services were ever missed by her.

She leaves to mourn her passing, eight daughters, Mrs. T. R. Golden, Mrs. Emel Tech, Mrs. F. M. Laughlin, Mrs. E. M. Haley, Mrs. P. L. Hansen, Mrs. Wm. Ogden, all of Calumet, Mrs. J. W. Johnston, of Lodi, California and Miss Wilma McCoy of Topeka, Kansas; 14 grand children, and 10 great grand children. Besides these near relatives, there are others and a host of friends.

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church on Friday July 12, with Rev. C. J. Dennison and Rev. A. Steiger officiating. Her favorite Scripture verses were: "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house the Lord." "Precious in the sight of the Lord, is the death of his saints."

A mens quartet composed Tom Hurst, George Bullock, Fred Laughlin and R. O. Meschberger, with Mrs. Max Shaw the piano, sang Mrs. McCoy's favorite songs: God Will Take Care of You" and "Gathering home", A solo "Asleep in Jesus" was sung by Mrs. Lynn Holman.

Pall bearers were Max Shaw, M. E. Thompson, C. C. Condry, Lee Penwright, C. V. Eckelberry and Jack Marye.

Burial was in the Calumet Cemetery. Wilson funeral had charge of the arrangements.

439 Carydon "Cary" Blagg left his first wife, Matilda F. Forinash, and his son, William I. Blagg, Sr. sometime around 1900. According to my grandfather, Cary left WV and moved to OH where he died. I have since discovered that this was not true, as Cary remarried and reared a family very near the home of his first wife in Newville, WV. According to Beulah Rhea (my grandfather's first cousin), my granfather disliked his father, presumably for deserting his family, and rarely acknowledged his existence.

According to Ruth (Blagg) McDonald, Cary and his brother George worked in a rather interesting field - counterfeiting. As her story goes, Cary and George produced enough of the fake bills to draw the attention of the Federal Government. The two brothers moved to Colorado for a while to avoid problems with the law (George remained there until his death in 1959). Supposedly, George's stash was discovered and confiscated, but Cary's remained unclaimed. Ruth asked him about it about a month before his death in 1952. His only reply was, "No one will ever find it." Looks like great-grandfather Cary might be right.

Hugh A. Kelly, a farmer residing on section 15, Cedar Township, is a native of Augusta County, W. Va., and reared in Greenbrier County, Feb. 26, 1813. He came to Fulton County, IL., in 1833, where he remained from November until the following April, when he moved to Cedar Township. His father, James, was a native of Virginia, and his parents were from Ireland. James Kelly, the father, died in 1819. He married Miss Jane (Hulit) Kelly, also of Irish extraction. This lady died in 1843, but had become the mother of 4 children - Hugh A., Nancy, Sarah and James. The gentleman whose name heads this biography married Miss Catherine Castle, Dec. 13, 1832, and her death took place Mar 24, 1881. They had no children. Mrs. Kelly's parents were of German & Irish extraction, and of her family there is one sister living.

Mr. Kelly may be counted as one among the oldest pioneers of this township. Altogether he has been Supervisor of the township for three terms, as well as school director for the last twenty years. He is one among the foremost members of his lodge in the ancient craft of Masonry. He was first a Mason in 1861, in Abingdon Lodge 185. Mr. Kelly has 240 acres of improved land, on which he erected a fine dwelling in 1865. He is one among the prominent breeders of short-horn cattle and his horses are all good grades. He has devoted his life to farming and stock-raising and has been quite successful in the accumulation of property. He is regarded as one of Cedar Township's most thrifty and enterprising farmers. His farm ranks high among the many excellent ones of this splendid county. He is a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, as was also his wife, who took an active part in the good of that Christian organization. In politics he favors Democracy and by that party is considered one of its best friends.
