Hunter, 84, passed away Friday, Jan. 4, 2002, in Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Fairlea, following a short illness. Born March 6, 1917, in Kieffer, he was the son of the late Jennings and Zenna Walkup Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a farmer, miner and lumberman and was of the Methodist faith. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, having received three medals for serving his country during the American Campaign, European African Middle Eastern Campaign and while serving on Oran Roberts Liberty Ship as seaman 1st gunnermate from April 20, 1944, to Aug. 18, 1945. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shelvie Jean Pitsenbarger Miller, in 1973; two brothers, Ray and Marvin Hunter; and five sisters, Gertrude Quick, Margie Walkup, Ruth Lauer, Dorothy Hunter and Jackie Eilts. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Stella Retha Phipps Hunter; three daughters, Shirley King and her husband, Jimmy, of Crawley, and Dale Riffey and her husband, David, and Diana Miller and her husband, Bill, all of Meadow Bluff; two sons, Warren Hunter and his wife, Kay, of Rainelle and Wyatt Hunter and his wife, Bonnie, of Asbury; two brothers, Robert Hunter of Crawley and Carl Hunter of Rupert; two sisters, Gladys Hedrick of Kessler and Gaye Eilts of Wabash, Ind.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Service will be 1 p.m. Monday at Smathers Funeral Home Chapel, Rainelle, with the Revs. Mike Tincher and Bill Lilly officiating. Burial will follow in Old Amwell Church, Meadow Bluff. Graveside services will be conducted by Oak Hill VFW Post No. 3110. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She is survived by two sisters: Mrs. Ella Edwards of Fillmore, and Mrs. Susie Clark of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Agness Oliver, is deceased.
