| 3303 | ROANOKE, Va. - Cletis Francis "Skeets" Robertson, 85, went home to his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001. Born in Renick, he was the son of the late Mary Jane "Molly" Crane Robertson and Cleveland Claudius Robertson. Mr. Robertson was preceded in death by his brother, Booker Granvill Robertson; and his brother and sister, Hortis and Gladys, who died in their childhood. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Donna Marie Roberston Burechson of Roanoke and Philadelphia, and son-in law, Keith Burechson of Philadelphia. Survivors include a special niece, Glenna Schelch of Homestead, Va., and longtime friend, Marie Kinkaid of Beckley; and a host of family and friends in the Lewisburg and Baltimore areas. Also mourning his loss are numerous friends who remember Mr. Robertson as a generous, upbeat person with a ready smile, a kind word and a quick wit. He enjoyed walking several miles each day and is fondly remembered by acquaintances, neighbors and friends at the Krispy Kreme Donut Shop as "the gentleman who always wore a hat while out walking." Mr. Robertson will be greatly missed by the members of his church, Garden City Bible Baptist, where he had been a faithful member for several decades, singing in the choir and performing special music by request. Known throughout the region as a bluegrass and gospel musician, he began writing and performing at an early age. Local and nationally known musicians, many of whom he mentored in the early years of their careers, respected his talents with several instruments, especially the guitar and banjo. His knowledge of the history of early bluegrass music was renown, and he was sought frequently by authors and journalists for his first-hand experiences and friendships in the music industry. Mr. Robertson retired from J.M. Turner and Co. Inc. in 1981, having worked there for 25 years. His co-workers and business associates whose friendship he had maintained will miss his kindness and willingness to be of help. Service will be noon Saturday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Mr. Robertson's cousin, the Rev. W.L. Crane, and the Revs. Jeff Gardner and Catherine Houchins officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Roanoke. Friends are invited to share in the loss and celebrate the life of Mr. Robertson with the family from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. | Robertson, Cletis Francis "Skeets" (I15797)

| 3306 | Robert Hunter's birth record lists his middle initial as "B," however, every record found after his birth indicates his middle initial as "A." GREENBRIER INDEPENDENT, Lewisburg, WV, January 7, 1938 - Number 29 Murder Suspected in Death Of Aged Man Believed Bob Hunter Was Assaulted For Money in Possession Robert Hunter, a farmhand 68 years old died on Sunday morning about 5 o'clock at the hospital at East Rainelle. His death has given rise to a mystery which the authorities are endeavoring to solve. Corp. H. E. Locke of the state police detachment at East Rainelle and Deputy Sheriff Les Ferrell believing that Hunter was murdered for the purpose of robbing him of $70 to $80 he is said to have had in his possession. Hunter lived alone in a three-room house on the farm of Newton Dietz in Meadow Bluff district two miles north of Kieffer. On Saturday morning about 10 o'clock while Joe and Wm. Deitz, son of Mr. Deitz, were hauling corn they stopped at Hunter's house to get the key to the granary, which appears to have been in his possession. There was no response to a call. Then one of the boys went to the front door, found it locked, and peered through a window in the livingroom. He saw Hunter lying on the floor with his head beside and partly under the grate in the room. He was unconscious, was burned on the right side of the face and right side of the head, and as soon as he arrived at the hospital about 11 a.m. it was found that he had four wounds on the top of the head, extending to the skull which appeared to have been made by blows with a club. A stick was found at the place about two feet long and an inch through which may have been used for the purpose of stunning Hunter. The theory of the police is that he was assaulted in the kitchen, dragged into the livingroom and placed under the grate to make it appear that he had fallen from a chair and struck the grate with his head. Corp. Locke said it would have been impossible for Hunter to have received his injuries by a fall from a chair. One of his feet was found resting on a -------- as he lay on the floor. -------------and robbed Hunter also based on what Jennings Hunter, one of the dead man's sons, told the officers. He said his father had told him on Friday that he had about $70 or $80 in a truck at his home. Beside the trunk a hammer was found with which the lock is believed to have been broken. No money was found in the trunk, the contents of which appear to have been gone over carefully. A watch in the trunk was not taken. When Hunter's clothing was searched $2.17 were found in a pocket. It is said that while at the hospital Hunter aroused partially and told the nurse that something had hit him in the kitchen, but he could not remember anything else. So far, the officers report, no clue has been found that leads to the solution of the mystery of hunter's death. Funeral services for Hunter were held on Tuesday morning at the Kieffer Baptist church, Revs. T.V. Allen and Homer C. Piercy officiating. Interment was made in the Walkup cemetery near Crawley. Hunter is survived by several children and his second wife. Among the children are Jennings Hunter of Kieffer, George of Riverside, Sam of Rupert, Wade of East Rainelle. The widow lives at Kieffer and a daughter, Mrs. Sanford, lives at East Rainelle. | Hunter, Robert A. "Bob" (I12856)
