John Meek, (grandfather of the aforementioned John Meek, who married Jane McCutcheon), the first of the name of whom we have positive record, was living on Little River in "Calf Pastures," Augusta County, Virginia, in 1750, with his son, Thomas Meek. John Meek died in 1761. Their son, Thomas Meek was married to Agnes ---. Thomas Meek was in the Battle of King's Mountain. He died in 1786 or 1787, as his will was proved in 1788. His children were Daniel Meek (who married Elizabeth Allen); Samuel Meek (who married Elizabeth ---); Elizabeth Meek (who married James Peak); John Meek (who married Jane McCutcheon); and Mary Meek (who married John Vachub or Wachub). The widow of Thomas Meek, Agnes --- Meek, died in September, 1794, and her eldest son, Daniel Meek, administered the estate. He served in the South Pacific during World War II after surviving the Pearl Harbor bombing Dec. 7, 1941 aboard the destroyer USS Tucker. A native of Williamson, W. Va., he is survived by his wife, Helen; his mother, Mrs. Cleo Bailey; his stepfather, R. G. Bailey; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Starr of San Leandro; and a brother, Robert L. Shumate. He was born in Newville, WV on March 13, 1930, and was the son of the late James Author Rhea and Beulah (Pullin) Rhea. Vandal is survived by one, son John Rhea of Sutton, three grandchildren, Jamie Feick, Jason Flynn, Dean Flynn, and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Vivana Salzgiver of Mansfield, OH and Vilena Shoenfelt of Fredericktown, OH. In addition to his parents, Vandal was preceded in death by one daughter, Janet Flynn-Greer, two brothers Victor Rhea, Vernon Rhea, two sisters Veatrice Boggs, Valera Kurtz, and one grandchild Mark Greer. Vandal was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to deer, bear, and mushroom hunt, and search for deer horns. He also enjoyed the art of whittling. He made an entire chain out of hand carved wood. He was a great story teller and had an amazing memory of dates. He had a love for guns and was a member of the AMVETS social club. He also loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was born on Feb. 27, 1928, in Lowell, to Edward and Bertha (Goepp) Eilts. He married E. Gaye Hunter in Columbia City on Sept. 25, 1954; she survives. Mr. Eilts was a 1946 graduate of Laketon High School and attended one year of college at Florida Southern and three years at Manchester College. He owned and operated Ted Eilts Trenching Service, Wabash, for 53 years. He was a mushroom hunter, an avid fisherman, horseman, trapper, outdoorsman and environmentalist. He invented children's games, enjoyed playing cards and played basketball for 30 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, North Manchester. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was in the 101st paratroopers during the Korean War and was voted for and received the Most Outstanding Basketball Player award during that war in occupied Japan. He as a member of the Wabash VFW Post 286 and the Wabash American Legion Post No.15. Surviving are two sons, Lt. Col. Ted B. (Lori Lynn) Eilts, Natchitoches, La., and Timothy (Virginia) Eilts, Wabash; one daughter, Mrs. Bill (Lori) Rushin, Greenwood; five brothers, John A. Eilts, Craig, Colo., August H. He was born June 21, 1933 in Ritchie County, Cairo, West Virginia. He had resided in Lorain most of his life. Charles was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953 and served our country until 1955. Charles had worked and retired from Ford Motor Co., following 27 years of service. He and Dora took the trip of a lifetime to visit Israel in 1995. She loved spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Garnette had devoted her life to her family as a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Services will be held Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. in R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home Inc. at Dennison, O., with Preacher James Hobbs Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Ridgecrest Memory Gardens at Dover, O. Calling hours are Tuesday, June 24, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the funeral home.
