Death of Capt. Crane

It is with much sorrow that we learn of the death of Capt. Joseph S. Crane, which occurred, as we learned from our Meadow Bluff correspondent, at the home of Mrs. Hines, on Mill Creek, near Rupert's, last Sunday, the 17th instant. Capt. Crane was a native of Baltimore, Md., and the last of the immediate family of the late Joseph Crane, who moved from Maryland to this county many years ago.

When a young man, Capt. Crane served for about three years in the United States navy, and visited, during this time, many parts of the world. He was a Captain in the State militia here in Greenbrier, prior to the late war, and thus got the title of Captain. When the war between the States broke out, he volunteered in the first company that left the county under command of the late Capt. Rob't F. Dennis. Capt. Crane was a printer by trade, and at one time edited the Era published here in Lewisburg. He worked for some years on the INDEPENDENT and during the summer season did the job printing at the White Sulphur Springs. The Captain was charitable and generous to a fault, giving away all he ever made to relatives and friends. He never married, and was about 79 years of age. His body was laid to rest in the burying ground at Amwell Church, beside his brother, Edward, who died about twelve years ago.

Article originally published 26 Aug. 1950 in the Centennial Edition of the Beckley Post-Herald newspaper. Reprinted by permission.

Peter Davis married Susannah Meadows, who was the daughter of Josiah Meadows, and they are grandparents of William Davis, whose family is scattered throughout the United States.

Josiah Meadows was a Revolutionary war soldier. Peter Davis was the father of John Davis, whose son was William Davis. William's father, John, married Mary Ann Fox, a daughter of William Fox.

William Davis married Lucinda Williams. He was born Feb. 26, 1832; his wife was born June 6, 1836. After their marriage, they settled at Cabell, near Mount Tabor.

The children of William and Lucinda were:

Jane Davis, who was born Sept. 3, 1853. She married William Snuffer. Her sister, Susan Davis, was born Oct. 25, 1855, and married Sparriel Snuffer, a brother of William. William and Sparriel were sons of Peter Snuffer of Crab Orchard, who died in 1893.

John W. Davis was born on May 10, 1857, and married Parmelia Lively; Henry, born Dec. 5, 1858, married Elizabeth Hutchinson; Mary E., born July 24, 1860, married Henry Harper, the founder of Harper; W. N. (Bub), born March 29, 1862, married Lena Fleshman; Margaret, born April 3, 1864, married Harvey Cook, father of Azel L. Cook; Ruhama, born Sept. 18, 1865, married Oliver Riffe; Peter B., born Dec. 22, 1867, married twice, first to Louisa Turner; Owen, born Aug. 14, 1869, married Ida Quesenberry; Celia, born May 2, 1871, married twice, first to Milton Hawley and next to Walter W. Wills; Andrew, born Oct. 14, 1872, married Mosby Prince, and Perny, born Aug. 11, 1874, married Edith Hutchinson.

All of William and Lucinda's children are now dead, with the exception of Mrs. Celia Willis of Bluefield.

Clarence Ray Hiser, 55, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 in Graham. Graveside services will be held Friday, January 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Clarence was born May 8, 1965 in Lordsburg, New Mexico to Yolanda Martinez and the late John Paul Hiser. He married Glenda Waldrep June 28, 1985 in Newcastle. Clarence loved hunting, guns, football, and beer. But more than anything he loved his family. He spent most of his life working as a wireline engineer, where everyone knew him as 'Big C'. Aside from work, all of his free time was spent with family or watching John Wayne westerns. His most recent and proudest achievement was being 'Pops' to his grandkids. He didn't always have a lot to say, but he had the biggest heart and gave the best hugs. He was easy going, lighthearted, and was always there to listen. And somehow the food always tasted better when he was around. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.

Survivors include: wife of 35 years, Glenda Hiser of Graham; daughter, Jacklyn Hoover and husband, Matt of Richardson; son, Ethan Hiser and wife, Stacey Carter of Graham; mother, Yolanda Wilson and husband, Leon; sisters, Cynthia Crowe and husband, Steven, Rachel Rankin and husband, Rob, and Amy Blair; brothers, Jeff Hiser and wife, Wendy and Leon Wilson; grandchildren, Carson, Garrett, Heidi, Kinzlee, and Emmalee.
