2404 History of Hancock County, Indiana, From Its Earliest Settlement by the "Pale Face," in 1818, Down to 1882, p. 368

Andrew T. Hart, senior member of the mercantile firm of Hart & Thayer, of this city, a native of the "Ancient Dominion," was born July 7, 1811. His father, a son of Erin, was a soldier under General St. Clair at the time of his memorable defeat, near the head-waters of the Wabash, in 1791. Andrew T. Hart, while a boy, endured the privations of pioneer life in his native State. At the age of eleven he removed from the home of his earlier youth to Centerville, Wayne county, where he attended such public and private schools as the country then afforded, and acquired a common English education. His opportunities, however, were limited, and the success that has attended his career has been mainly the result of his own exertions, and it may be properly said that he is the architect of his own fortune. At the age of eighteen, he was apprenticed as a saddler with his brother, James B. Hart, of Liberty, Indiana, which trade he faithfully followed for three years, or until 1833, when he removed to Greenfield, where he has since resided. He at once opened a grocer' store, in which business he continued for two years; then as a clerk for Nicholas & McCarty for one year, followed by a mercantile partnership with Nathan Crawford for two years, when he purchased Crawford's interest, and has continued in the same business ever since, alone and otherwise. Mr. H. has filled a number of positions of public trust, and always with honor. In 1839 he was appointed agent of Indiana for the distribution of surplus revenue. He was the first treasurer elected in Hancock county, the prior treasurers being appointed by the commissioners. This was in 1841. In 1843 he was re-elected, and served for six consecutive years. In 1869 he was commissioned by Salmon P. Chase as U. S. assistant assessor for this county. Mr. H. has been prominently connected with almost all public enterprises in the county during his residence therein. In 1878 he was President of the Hancock Agricultural Society. He become a Mason in 1859, and an Odd Fellow in 1865. In religion he is of orthodox faith. In politics he was first a Whig, and since a Republican. His first vote was cast for Henry Clay. He has been twice married. First, to Miss Louisa Forelander, in June, 1835, who lived but two years. In November, 1838, he was married to Miss Gabriella Sebastian, daughter of William and Elizabeth Sebastian. Mr. Hart has had five children. William E. was a soldier in the 18th Indiana Volunteers, and served for three years. After his discharge he joined and served in Capt. A. K. Branham's company of State troops in the pursuit of John Morgan, in his celebrated raid in Indiana and Ohio, and was killed in that unfortunate disaster at Lawrenceburg, Indiana, in 1863. Mr. H. is a man much respected and highly esteemed by all who know him. He is of genial nature, kind and hospitable. steadfast in his friendship, and upright in his dealings, and by his good qualities of head and heart has endeared himself to every citizen of the county.

Hollis B. Thayer

In the memorial annals of Hancock county there are few names held in more grateful remembrance than that of the late Hollis B. Thayer, who for many years was one of the most active and influential figures in the commercial and social life of Greenfield. No less distinctly outlined in the memory of the passing generation hereabout is the figure of the late Andrew T. Hart, former county treasurer and for many years one of Greenfield's leading merchants, father-in-law of Mr. Thayer; these two strong men having been for years associated together in business in Greenfield, after the death of Mr. Hart the business being continued by Mr. Thayer until the latter's death. Mr. Thayer's widow, daughter of Mr. Hart, is still living at Greenfield, where she has a very pleasant home and where she enjoys many evidences of the high esteem in which she is held throughout the entire community.

Hollis B. Thayer was a native of New Hampshire, born in the town of Keene, that state, September 24, 1833. When twenty years old he came into Indiana with the construction crew of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, at that time building the road through the eastern part of this state, and while thus engaged received his introduction to the town of Greenfield. Starting in as a common laborer in the railroad work, Mr. Thayer presently became superintendent of one of the departments of construction and was thus engaged until 1869, two years after his marriage. He then formed a partnership with his father-in-law, Andrew T. Hart, in the general merchandise business at Greenfield, this mutually agreeable connection continuing until the death of Mr. Hart in 1888, after which Mr. Thayer continued the business as sole proprietor until his death on February 21, 1904, he then being seventy years of age. During his long connection with the commercial life of Greenfield and Hancock county, Hollis B. Thayer impressed his personality strongly upon this community. He was successful in his business, his diligence and enterprise having been duly rewarded, and at the time of his death was the owner of considerable valuable real estate in Greenfield. Mr. Thayer was a Republican and ever took a personal interest in measures looking to the perpetuation of good government, but never was included in the office-seeking class.

It was on April 5, 1858, at Greenfield, that Hollis B. Thayer was united in marriage to Permelia Hart, who was born in Greenfield in December 5, 1839, daughter of Andrew T. and Gabriellla (Sebastian) Hart, who were among the early residents of that city. Andrew T. Hart was a Virginian, born on July 7, 1811, who came to Indiana in an early day in the settlement of this section of the state and became, as noted above, one of the most energetic and influential citizens of Greenfield. Mr. Hart was twice married, his first wife, who was a Mrs. Folander, having died about two years after their marriage. He then married secondly, Gabriella Sebastian, who was born in Kentucky on February 8, 1816, and who had come into Indiana with her parents, William Sebastian and wife, native of Kentucky, the family locating in the then hamlet of Greenfield about 1830. William Sebastian entered a claim to a quarter of a section of "Congress land" in that neighborhood and was one of the real pioneers of Greenfield, in which place he for years conducted a tavern, during the old stage-coach days. He also operated a pioneer blacksmith shop and for years was postmaster of the village. Andrew T. Hart became one of the early merchants of Greenfield and was very successful in business. After his daughter's marriage to Hollis B. Thayer he formed a partnership with the latter and that partnership was continued until his death in 1888, he then being seventy-seven years of age. Mr. Hart was a Republican and for years was one of the active leaders of that party in this county. For some years he served as county treasurer of Hancock county and in other ways rendered such services as he could in the public behalf. He and his wife were members of the Christian church and took a prominent part in good works in their day. Mrs. Hart survived her husband but two years, her death occurring in 1890, she then being seventy-fours years of age. They were the parents of six children, of whom Mrs. Thayer was the first born.

To Hollis B. and Permelia (Sebastian) Thayer two children were born, Millie, born June 30,1859, who died in her youth, and Edwin, born in December, 1864, who makes his home in Greenfield, though his chief business interests now are connected with a great irrigation project in Arizona. Edwin Thayer married Minnine Ridpath, who was born in Greencastle, this state, and to this union two children have been born, George, a mining engineer, who married Bessie Walker and is now living in Arizona, and Roxie, who married Luther O. Eldridge, of California, and has one child, a daughter, Jeanne. Though now nearing the four-score stage of her life, Mrs. Thayer is hale and hearty and takes a keen zest in current affairs. She for many years has been an active member of the Bradley Methodist Episcopal church and still takes a warm interest in that congregation's various activities. Mrs. Thayer is a charter member of the locally influential Hesperian Club and continues her active interest in that organization. She has traveled widely and has made wise use of her opportunities.

2407 History of Taylor County, Iowa: From the Earliest Historic Times to 1910 by Frank E. Crosson. Chicago, The S.J. Clarke Publishing Co. 1910, page 589

J. F. Walkup is numbered among the large landowners and substantial citizens of Taylor county, dating his residence here from 1870. He was born in Greenbrier county, West Virginia, May 9, 1852, and was there reared to the age of seventeen years, having been trained to the duties of farm life. In 1870, being then a youth of eighteen, he came to Taylor county, Iowa, where for six years during the summer months he was employed at farm labor. For four years during the winter months he continued his studies in the schools of this county, his earlier education having been acquired in the schools of his native county. After completing his education he was engaged for two years during the winter season as a teacher but he continued to carry on farm work during the summer months.

It was in 1880 that Mr. Walkup established a home of his own by his marriage in Clayton township, this county, to Miss Mary Mehan, their wedding ceremony being performed on the 9th of March of that year. Mrs. Walkup was born and reared in this county. Following their marriage they located on a farm of eighty acres in Clayton township, which Mr. Walkup had previously bought. After about four years, however, he disposed of that land and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of his present home place in Gay township. This tract was but partly cleared but in due time Mr. Walkup had the entire place under cultivation. He further improved the farm by the erection of a house and outbuildings, set out an orchard, built fences and made it a valuable property. As time passed and the sale of his crops brought him good financial returns, he invested his money in more land from time to time until the home place now comprises two hundred and forty acres. In 1908 he erected a modern and substantial farm residence and added more outbuildings and his place today is one of the best in his section of the county. In addition to carrying on general farming he also gives attention to raising and feeding stock, annually raising a carload of hogs. Mr. Walkup also owns another farm of eighty acres, which he rents. It will thus be seen that he made no mistake in locating in Taylor county during (page 590) its pioneer period, for through his labors and his wise judgment he has accumulated a good property.

The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Walkup has been blessed with three sons and two daughters, namely: Blanche, the wife of Lon Keith, a resident of Canada; Maude, the wife of Earl Gordon, a resident farmer of Clayton township; Roy C., who is on a ranch in New Mexico; and Glen and Frank, who are still at home.

Politically Mr. Walkup is a democrat. For a number of years he has served as township trustee, while he has also filled the office of road supervisor and has been identified with the school board as a director. Popular and public spirited, he has been chosen by his party as a delegate to county conventions. His religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Baptist church. Since coming to the county almost four decades ago he has seen many changes as the railroads have been built through this section, the telephone and telegraph lines introduced and many other modern and needed improvements made. He has been a leader in much of the work that has been accomplished and takes a just pride in seeing Taylor county rank with the best sections of the state of Iowa.

Judge Jesse Williams was born in Pulaski County, Ky., Aug. 3, 1798. In 1815 his parents moved to Fayette County, Ind. where they passed the remainder of their days. In 1820 Judge Williams came to Wayne County, Ind., located at Centreville, and opened a harness and saddler's shop. A few years later he formed a partnership with W. S. T. Morton in the general mercantile business, continuing eight years. In the meantime he was appointed Associate Judge to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Asa M Sherman, and at the regular term was elected to the same office. He served in the capacity of Associate Judge fifteen years. In the fall of 1837 he moved to the farm where he still resides, a mile and a half east of Centreville, at that time heavily timbered. He was married in 1820 to Mary, daughter of Patrick Hart. Of their eight children, three are living - Arthur P., H. Jerome, and Maria E., wife of John S. Chittenden. Mrs. Williams died June 13, 1847, and the Judge afterward married Elizabeth, widow of William Poston. She died Nov. 8, 1883. Corrected Pedigrees by Jeff Carr

Teter. This one may be old news. It was once widely circulated that George Dieter/Teter, the progenitor of the family in Pendleton, had once lived in Frederick Co., VA on Opequon Creek. The well-known Rev. John Casper Stoever baptized several children of a George Teter at that place in the 1730's; these were published in Early Lutheran Baptisms and Marriages in Southeastern Pennsylvania. Those baptisms belong to another contemporary George Teter that did live at that place. His descendants migrated westward along the Valley of Virginia, and were living in the New River area by the Revolutionary War. The George Teter that was the ancestor of the local family has been documented as having lived in old Orange Co., VA, now Madison County, during the 1730's and 1740's. He died there in 1744. Again, this has been correctly reported in other publications such as the Henckel Bulletin and the Teter Descendants of Hans Jorg and Maria Dieter, by Eva (Teter) Winfield (1992). However, some readers of this journal may not have had access to those works.
