Marian is survived by her children, Mindy Leen (Chad) and Roy Tipton Jr.; grandchildren, Sabrina Cox, Katrina Smith (Tyler), Kevin Tipton, and Casey Campbell (Tanner); many great-grandchildren; and siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Tipton. She was the best Mamaw anyone could ask for. Nancy is survived by: a daughter, Dawn Renee Hedrick and husband Charles of Franklin; a sister, Vergie Cartwright and husband John of Ft. Seybert; and 3 grandchildren, Courtney McCutcheon of Roanoke, VA, Maggie Hedrick of Indianapolis, IN, and Morgan Hedrick of Franklin. Seybert, WV, Brenda Jackson of Summersville, WV; a step daughter, Phyllis Hurt of TN; 2 step sons, Darrell Cartwright of Sumersville, WV, Basil "Darvin" Cartwright (Mary) of Sumersville, WV; 13 grandchildren; a number of great-grandchildren; and a number of great-great-grandchildren. | 218 | Beckley Post-Herald, 1 May 1946 Assault Fatal To Greenbrier Lady LEWISBURG, April 30 - Mrs. Maxie Jane Kelly, of Muddy Creek Mountain, widow of the late Sam Kelly, died at a Ronceverte hospital this afternoon at 1:45 of a compound skull fracture. The woman's injury allegedly was the result of an attack made on her last Wednesday night between 8:30 and 9 o'clock by Fred Lewis and his sister, Edith Young, Negroes, of Leslie. Mrs. Kelly was taken to the hospital last Wednesday night in an unconscious condition. She never regained consciousness to give an account of the assault made on her. Her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Kelly, who made her home with her mother, went to the office of Prosecuting Attorney Nickell Kramer here the next morning and swore out a warrant for Lewis and his sister for an assault and battery charge. She told the prosecuting attorney that the Negroes has come to the home Wednesday night. Mrs. Young, she said, knocked at the door and asked for some liniment, and that while her mother was standing in the doorway Lewis struck her over the head. The pair was arrested and placed in jail, and when Mrs. Kelly's condition became worse her daughter obtained warrants against the pair for assault with intent to kill. They are being held in the county jail to await grand jury action. Prosecuting Attorney Kramer and State Troopers Shirley Clinton and W. M. Shanklin are investigating the case to determine if the alleged assault resulted in Mrs. Kelly's death. She was born at Lewisburg on September 22, 1894. Fisher, 60, of Beckley was shot to death at about 10 p.m. Wednesday in a rooming house at 216 N. Heber St. Fisher died of a bullet wound in the temple. The weapon was a .22 caliber pistol. Charged with the slaying was a boarder, Wayne Atkins, 55. Fisher allegedly gained entrance to Atkins' room after breaking into the boarding home which is operated by Fisher's wife, Aleen, city police said. The couple was having marital problems and were in the process of obtaining a divorce, officers reported. Fisher had been staying at a home on Fairview Avenue. Officers said Fisher reportedly shot through the window of a ground floor bedroom occupied by his wife and then went to the front door where he broke the window glass to obtain entry. After a scuffle with his wife, police said, Fisher went upstairs to Atkins' second-story bedroom where he broke the lock on the door and entered the room. Atkins told police he jumped from the bed and crouched beside a wardrobe in the room, from where the shooting took place. Beckley Post-Herald, 12 June 1970 Shooting Victim's Final Rites Set Otho E. Rites are complete for Alfred Theodore Highlander, 50, who died Tuesday morning in a Ronceverte hospital, of injuries received in an accident Monday afternoon. He was a resident of Muddy Creek Mountain near Alderson. Highlander, an employe of the Acme Limestone Plant at Snowflake, was crushed when a section of rock from the top of the mine fell. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Glenna Phillips Highlander; three sons, William, Rodney, and Dexter; and two daughters, Misses Doris Jean and Anna Mae, all of Alderson. | 239 | Beckley Post-Herald, 25 February 1953 Miss Betty Phipps Is Wed Friday To Joseph Briscoe ALDERSON, Feb. 24 - The Johnson Memorial Methodist Church was the scene Friday evening of the marriage of Miss Betty Phipps, daughter of Mrs. Clara Phipps McVey of Quinnimont and the late Enoch Phipps, and Joseph H. Briscoe, son of Mrs. Alma Coffey Briscoe of Charleston. Greenery, baskets of white gladioli and lighted tapers formed the background for the double ring ceremony performed by the Rev. Charles W. Ambrose, Jr. before an altar banked with ferns. Given in marriage by her brother, Robert E. Phipps, of Fairfax, Va., the bride wore a ballerina length gown of white Chantilly lace over satin fashioned with an off-shoulder neckline with inserts of lace and an overskirt of telle. Her fingertip veil was held in place by a headdress of Chantilly lace and seed pearls. Her only jewelry was a single strand of pearls, a family heirloom. She carried a white prayer book with marker of white orchids and ribbon streamers. Mrs. Robert E. Phipps, sister-in-law of the bride, was her only attendant. She wore a ballerina length gown of French blue fashioned with a lace bodice and skirt of nylon tulle and a matching stole. A juliet cap of matching lace with short veil completed her costume. She carried a nosegay of yellow rosebuds. William R. Dixon of Charleston served his brother-in-law as best man and ushers were Lewis B. Withrow, of Charleston and William T. Simmons of Alderson. Just before the ceremony, Mrs. Richard Lirgo sang "Because" and at the end of the ceremony, "The Lord's Prayer." She was accompanied by Mrs. Ossie Keadle at the organ, who also played the traditional wedding music. The bride, a graduate of Alderson High School, attended Capital City Commercial College, Charlestonm and is a member of Alpha Iota Sorority and Order of Eastern Star. The groom, an alumnus of Stonewall Jackson High School studied at University of Oklahoma, Tulsa, Okla. When the young couple left for an undisclosed wedding trip the bride was wearing a beige suit, with black accessories and a mink scarf. On their return they will establish a residence in Charleston where both are employed by the Esso Standard Oil Company. Immediately following the ceremony, a buffet supper was served to the bridal party and out of town guests at the home of the bride's uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Bare, Jr. When Mrs. Bare and the bride's mother, Mrs. McVey, received their guests, Mrs. McVey was wearing a costume of navy blue faille with white accessories and a gardenia corsage. | 250 | Beckley Post-Herald, 30 December 1968 Mrs, Lula Craft Dies; Rites Slated RUPERT (RNS) - Mrs. Lula Craft, 65, of Silver Spring, Md., formerly of Rupert, died Sunday morning in a Silver Spring hospital after a short illness. Born Oct. 10, 1903, at White Sulphur Springs, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Clara Hunter Crane. Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Shelma Lerch of Hyattsville, Md., Mrs. Annabelle Osborne of East Orwell, Ohio, Mrs. Mary Lou Harris of Ormond Beach, Fla., Mrs Lillion Bryant of Silver Spring, Md., and Mrs. Dorothy (Dollie) Hendrix of Edgewater, Md.; four sons, Robert, Richard, Carl and Roger, all of Silver Spring, Md., and 20 grandchildren. The funeral will he at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Wallace and Wallace Chapel at East Rainelle with Rev. Lee White in charge. Burial will be in the End-of-the-Trail Cemetery at Clintonville.
