In "A History of the Methodist Episcopal church", Vol. IV, a list of preachers' names reports Shadrack Chaney - Received 1821(24 yrs.), Located 1829.
In "The Monongalia Story, A Bicentennial History" by Earl Core he reports that in 1822 (&1823 by Preston County, WV history) Shadrick Cheney (26 years old) was a Circuit rider in the Redstone Circuit, Monongalia District which began in 1813 and ended in 1824 when the county churches of the M.E. faith went under the Monongalia Circuit, Pittsburgh Conference. The Monongalia Circuit extended from the Pennsylvania line southward into West Virginia. In 1827 & 1828 he was a rider in that Circuit. In 1838 & 1839 Shadrack traveled the Kingwood Circuit which included Morgantown, W. VA. As the population increased the district boundaries changed and were renamed while remaining in the general area of the District of West Augusta running from SW Pennsylvania through central West Virginia.
When Shadrach was 28 years old he married Mary Squires who was 20 years old. They had 12 children in the next 23 years, including a set of twins.
In the 1850 Census record of Harrison County, Ohio, Shadrach's occupation is that of a M.E. Clergyman.
According to his daughter Sarah's obituary, he was a minister at Mt. Hope M.E. Church.
By 1860 Shadrach had moved his family to Christian Co., Illinois where he became a farmer. The value of his Personal Estate is $500.00 with the value of his Real Estate being $1,600.00. In the Christian County Marriage Books, Shadrack performed two weddings in 1862 and a third and final wedding on February 14, 1864 at the age of 67.
In the 1864 Census for Christian Co. It appears that only John and Charles were living at home with Shadrach and Mary.
In the 1870 Illinois Census, Mary is 63 years old and Widowed. Her land is now valued at $8,000.00 and she is living next door to her son, James.
In 1880, Mary is 73 years old and her granddaughter, Jennie Simpson (Martha & Wesley's child), 17, was living with her. She was still next door to James. Martha and Wesley Simpson lived on the other side of her farm.
