Layton L. Mills, 54, Dies After Brief Illness
Layton L. Mills, Sr., 54, a former city policeman, died last night at his home in Sunshine following a brief illness. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Benham, lodge No. 11; a member of W. M. W. A. local No. 6623.
Mills came to Harlan 19 years ago from Tennessee and was employed with the R. C. Tway Coal Company and Crummies Creek Coal Company for a number of years.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10 a. m. in the Clover Street Church of God with the Rev. Jeffrey Simpson and the Rev. Peacock, officiating. Burial will be in the Hurst Cemetery in Middlesboro. The body will be taken to the home this afternoon and will remain until the funeral hour.
Survivors include his wife, Hattie, Sunshine; four sons, Layton Mills, Sunshine; James E. Mills, East Haven, Conn., Gerald Mills, Cincinnati; and Guy Mills, Shields.
One brother, William Earle Mills, Knoxville; three sisters, Mrs. Ethel Forester, Chapmanville, W. Va.; Mrs. Stella Watts, Knoxville; Mrs. Bess Huffstulter, Knoxville and seven grand children also survive.
Active pallbearers will be Fielding Hensley, Felix Belcher, Roy Hensley, Bennie Dann, Charles Jones, and Lawrence Thomas. Honorary pallbearers include Jack Howard, Harold Hurst, Charles Buckner, Wayne Beaver, Woodrow Huff, Bill Wilder, Olin Collins, R. C. Collins, Ova Lawson, E. L. Miller, Lee Haynes, Jim Branon, Jimmy Mitchell, P. N. Dizney, and Lee Farmer.
