Met a man the other day that deserves a lot of credit for making a comeback after a crippling accident. His name is Theodore Neely, who lives near Layland on Backus Mountain. Neely suffered a severely injured spine when he was trapped under a slate fall August 23, 1949. Although not a complete paraplegia, Neely must wear braces and walk with a cane. He received medical care and physical rehabilitation from Kabat-Kaiser Institute specialists at Valejo, Calif., and Washington D.C. He decided that as his new career he would be a poultry farmer. Throught the assistance of the UMWA Welfare Fund and State Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, he got chicks, feed, and the other necessary essentials. For some time he marketed most of his products through his brother's store on Backus Mountain. Due to a needed return trip to the hospital, he was forced to sell his chickens since his wife was unable to take care of them and the small farm he owns, but he is already making plans for returning to the life of a poultry farmer.
