Brother Tells Of House Fight
Kin of Earl Berry Describes Argument, Won't Tell Reason
Claremont, June 14 - Indications that Earl Berry, 25, would contend the shotgun slaying of his wife, Myrtle, 21, was accidental were seen today in William Berry's story of the shooting.
William Berry said his brother, Earl, and a third brother, Charles, 16, were struggling on the kitchen floor of the Earl Berry home Thursday night when a double-barrel shotgun held by Earl discharged, the slugs ripping a hole in Mrs. Berry's chest.
The woman died early Friday morning in McKendree hospital.
Charles Berry was quoted by William as saying he hit Earl with a chair after Earl threatened Mrs. Berry with the shotgun. Earl was knocked to the floor but still held the gun, and both barrels of the weapon were fired when Charles fought to seize it, the older brother said.
The wounding followed an argument between Earl Berry and his wife into which Charles mixed when he claimed Earl threatened the girl with the gun.
William Berry would not disclose over what Mr. and Mrs. Berry were quarreling. He said:
"You can tell them they will have to leave that out, we won't talk about it".
