Retired Teacher Succumbs At 69
CORLISS (RNS) - Hugh M. Smith, 69, a retired Fayette County school teacher, died in a Beckley nursing home Friday after a long illness. Smith was born at Parkersburg, but lived the greater part of his life at Corliss. He was a son of the late Edward E. and Lou Moore Smith.
Survivors include three sisters, Miss Herma Smith, with whom he lived, and Mrs. Audrey W. Adams and Mrs. George Hatfield, both of Fayetteville. Smith was graduated from Alderson Baptist Academy, he received his B.S. degree from Morris Harvey College and a M.A. degree from West Virginia University where he earned his membership in Phi Beta Kappa.
He was a member of the Baptist Church and taught until his retirement in Fayette County schools. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Minnie Belle Baptist Church at Corliss with Rev. Billy Reed Wickline and Rev. Bobby McMillion in charge. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery at Corliss.
Friends may call at the Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Rainelle from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. today and the body will be taken to the church hour prior to services.
