- The Beckley Register-Herald, Beckley, WV, Online Edition, 21 March 2010
Matthew 11:28 "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." And so on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, our most loved Dovie Mae Phipps went to her eternal rest after a long illness at her home in Fairdale. She was in her 78th year.
Dovie Mae Tiano was born at Harper on March 22, 1931, the 4th of six children born to the late Frank and Mattie Mae Turner Tiano. A brother, Albert, and sisters, Ethel McClure, Virginia Williams, and Betty Surratt, preceded her in death.
Dovie spent her childhood at Paint Creek. She has been a resident of Fairdale since 1994, coming from Glen Daniel. Dovie enjoyed the outdoors. She loved to camp and fish. In addition to her family, she was preceded in death by her husband, Grover "Bub" Phipps; a niece, Wilma Miller; and a nephew, Charles McClure.
Left to cherish her memories is her good friend and companion for the past 18 years, John Combs; she was the fond sister of Norman Tiano of Beckley and a sister Laurie Godbey of Harper Heights; she was the dear aunt to several nieces and nephews; a large extended family also survives.
Funeral services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Cantley officiating. Jerry baptized Dovie at Lake Stephens and she held him in very high esteem. Burial will follow in the Wiseman Cemetery at Sandlick.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the hour of the service.
Family members will serve as pallbearers.
Condolences may be sent to the family's guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com.
Arrangements by Melton Mortuary, Beckley, W.Va.
