S-1/C William Albert Tyree, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Tyree of Bowemont, lost his life as the result of enemy action in the Atlantic April 24, the Navy department has informed his parents.
Seaman Tyree was serving on a destroyer escort and the navy had previously announced that this ship was sunk when it struck a mine.
The telegram to the family said:
"A careful review of all facts available relating to thedisappearance of your son leads to the conclusion that there is no hope for his survival."
Young Tyree's family had been advised two weeks ago that he was missing in action.
The youthful seaman had been on duty two and a half years and had participated in four invasions. He had been overseas 15 months.
Besides his parents are four sisters, Mrs. Mark Young of Kanawha City; Mina Lee, Shirley and Barbara, all at home; five brothers, Clifford, Ray, Richard, Dale and Herman, all at home; and a half-brother, Virgil Tyree of Elkview; and a grandfather, W. M. Hughart of 866 Greendale Dr.
