Rev. James F. Remley, 79, Mtn. Lake Park, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
Born Feb. 12, 1926, in Rainelle, W.Va., he was a son of the late Charlie and Edith (Bridges) Remley.
He was a minister with the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served as a pastor of a two-church charge for six years while completing graduate work at the Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill., receiving his master of divinity in 1958. He was a 1953 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, W.Va., with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. Before entering college, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 in Eu-rope and the Pacific.
From 1958 to 1960, he was an associate pastor with Rev. Ross Linges in Bridgeport, W.Va., and from 1960 to 1969, he was pastor of the three-church charge of Bethel United Methodist, Mountain Lake Park, White Church, Oakland, and Kurtz Chapel, Oakland. He also served the Swanton Otterbein United Methodist Church in 1970. In 1969, the Bethel United Methodist Church chose to become a one-church charge and requested Rev. Remley to be their pastor, which he did for 14 years until 1983.
He served as pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Barboursville, W.Va., from 1983 to 1990, and from 1990 to 1992 was pastor of Rowan United Methodist Church and Woodford United Methodist Church, Elkins, W.Va. He retired in 1992 but served the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, Cuzzart, W.Va., for two years. From 1992 to 2005 he sang with his wife and children in the Remley Family Gospel Group.
He was a past member of the Oakland/Mtn. Lake Park Lions Club from 1963 to 1983, the Messengers Gospel Music Group, and the Mt. Top Ministerial Association from 1960 to 1983, serving two years as president. He served as president of the Dennett Road PTA for two years and as president of the Center Street Elementary School PTA for one year.
He directed the Romney District Youth Camps, served as district youth director, and served as a member of the district camping committee, the district committee on church building and location, and the committee on the ordained ministry. He was the coordinator of the Southern Garrett Parish and was a former leader of Explorer Post #70 for 10 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann (Sutton) Remley; one son, Ed Remley and wife Lyn, Mtn. Lake Park; four daughters, Beverly Sincell and husband Ben, Oakland, Peggy Rohrbaugh and husband Dave, Oakland, Pamela DeBerry and husband John, Stafford, Va., and Rebecca Fike and husband Rodney, Accident; three brothers, Charles Remley and Ethan Remley, both of Toledo, Ohio, and John Remley, California, Md.; two sisters, Nova Patterson, Toledo, and Rae Matacia, Jacksonville Beach, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland, today, Thursday, Jan. 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the Bethel United Methodist Church on Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Darrin Jones officiating.
His body will be cremated and the cremains interred in the Rocky Gap Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, at a later date.
