Freddie A. Shumate, 65, of Bolt, formerly of Richmond, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at Raleigh General Hospital. Born Oct. 6, 1937, he was the son of Vallie Bailey McGraw of Beckley and the late Fred Shumate. Mr. Shumate served three years in the Marines and four years in the Air Force. He retired as assistant postmaster in Virginia. He spent many years as a long-distance trucker and also drove with Bandy Oil. He was active in the Share Program. He was a gun safety instructor and participated in fishing derbys. He was always active in community-related activities and events. He attended Bolt Church of God. Other survivors besides his mother include a sister, Phyllis York of Beckley; a son, Bryan Shumate of Richmond; a daughter, Vicky Shumate and grandson, Joseph Shumate, of Wichita Falls, Texas; and a dear friend, Jane Wickline of Daniels. Service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Bolt Church of God with Pastor Randy Pugh officiating. Burial will follow in Allen Cemetery, Bolt. Friends may call 2:30 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the church. Pallbearers will be Gary Brown, Larry Bailey, Bob Acord, Leslie Daniel, Joey Shumate, Jimmy Wickline and Mitch Bailey.
