MOUNT VERNON ? Alton Hedrick ?Al? McClung, 74, of Mount Vernon died Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at his residence.
Al was born Aug. 12, 1930, at Montgomery, W.Va., to the late Alva H. and Ida (Hedrick) McClung and moved to Knox County in 1977. He graduated from Morris Harvey College with a Bachelor of Science degree and earned his master?s degree from Xavier University. Al served on active duty with the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960 having served in the Korea conflict.
Al retired in 1984 as superintendent of Fredericktown schools after 30 years in public education as a principal, teacher, varsity basketball coach and athletic director in Noble, Ashtabula and Morgan counties. He then worked with the Ohio State Department of Education in the Department of School Finance, retiring in 1998. Al was elected to the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Basketball Hall of Fame, as a coach with over 100 wins.
He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon where he was active with the Work and Witness teams. Al was a member of the Knox County Retired Teachers Association, past president of the Fredericktown Lions Club and a member of the Buckeye Association of School Administrators.
Surviving are his wife, Marilyn (Sova) McClung, whom he married Aug. 26, 1950; his three daughters, Amy (Preston) Wilson, Jill (Scott) Erickson and Sara (David) Malone; seven grandchildren, Andrew Wilson, Andrea Wilson, Alexa Erickson, Molly Erickson, Samuel Malone, Sadie Malone and Macie Malone; and his brother, David William (Wanda) McClung of Luling, La.
Funeral service will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the First Church of the Nazarene in Mount Vernon with the Revs. Mikel Norris and Paul Merki officiating. Burial with military honors by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will follow in Mound View Cemetery at Mount Vernon. Friends may call at the church two hours prior to the funeral service. Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon.
