Merle Hurst Brooks, 89, of Fairdale, died Sunday, April 14, 2002, at her home following a long illness.
Born May 7, 1912, in Posey, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Emma Daniel Hurst.
Mrs. Brooks was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County and worked as a cook at Fairdale Elementary School for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and was an expert at quilting and sewing, and she enjoyed helping to rear many of her nephews and nieces. She was of the Protestant faith.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Brooks; four brothers, Asa, Connie, Sidney and Doug Hurst; and three sisters, Lillian Clay, Wavie Hurst and Louise Bowden.
Survivors include a sister, Sarah Acord of Fairdale; a brother, Lewis S. Hurst Sr. of Fairdale; and several nephews and nieces.
Service will be 1 p.m. today at Mel-ton Mortuary Chapel, Beckley, with the Rev. Juddy Hurst officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.
Friends called 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
