MAPLEWOOD — Thelma D. "Granny" Fox, 99, of Maplewood went home to be with the Lord on June 19, 2010, following a long illness.
Born October 20, 1910, at Carl, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Pitsenbarger and Sadie Meadows Pitsenbarger.
Known as Granny Fox, she was a homemaker and prayer warrior who dedicated her life to serving God, family, and friends. She may not have been able to attend church for the last few years, but she never failed to witness to anyone who visited her. To her 163 direct descendants she leaves behind a legacy of her unfailing faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her favorite passage of scripture was Acts chapter 10. Her desire was for everyone to make it to Heaven, and she did not mince words when it came to the plan of salvation.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Andrew Earl Fox Sr.; daughters, Sadie Eleanor, Freda Wanda, and Deloris Ann Maynard; son, Joseph Curtis Fox Sr.; sisters, Ethel Cross, Berthel Pitsenbarger, Bethel Amick, Mabel Carter, Zelma Gunnoe; brothers, Johnny Pitsenbarger, George Pitsenbarger, and Joseph Pitsenbarger; and three great-grandchildren.
Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Andrew "Bob" Fox and wife Marie of Maplewood and John Fox and wife Anna of Beckley; four daughters, Juanita Donelow and Cynthia Smith of Maplewood, Lena Ward and husband Todd of Lexington, Ky., and Ruth Fleshman and husband Roger of Beckley; one sister, Dorothy Campbell Fitzwater; 33 grandchildren, Thelma Shumate and husband Joel of Shady Spring, Cynthia "Lanie" Jones and husband Loran of Maplewood, Lynda Chrisman and husband David of Sam Black, David Fox and Mary of Murfreesboro, Tenn., Leonard Fox and wife Ann of Mich., Charles Fox and wife Debra of Asbury, William Fox of Mich., Karen Stover and husband Dale of Maplewood, Cecilia Crist and husband G.G. of Maplewood, Brenda Fox of Beckley, Patricia Acord and husband Mark of Nortonville, Ky., Johnny Fox Jr. and wife Malinda of Rainelle, Vivian Meadows and husband Howard of Beckley, Monica Nutter and husband Roland "Buzz" of Rainelle, Glenda Dilley and Curt of Charlestown, Dianna Critchley and husband Joe of Layland, Tim Fox and wife Amy of Mt. Hope, Heather Fox of Charleston, Cassandra Fox of Beckley, Dwayne Ward and wife Reneé of Cynthiana, Ky., Angela Cole and husband Hughie of Cynthiana, Ky., Jeremy Ward of Paris, Ky., Johnathan Ward and wife Elizabeth of Lexington, Ky., Arnie Maynard and wife Jennifer of Mt. Hope, Terri Vandall and husband Scott of Jane Lew, George Fox of Beckley, Roger Fleshman Jr. and Taunya of Victor, Rebecca Elswick and husband Keith of Scarbro, Michael Fleshman of Crab Orchard, Sheryl Harris and husband Donnie of Fayetteville, Beverly Evans and husband Josh of Oak Hill, Melissa Fleshman of Beckley; 64 great-grandchildren; 56 great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Gladys Hoffman; and a host of extended family and friends.
A celebration of "Granny's" life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, at Beckwith Apostolic Church with Rev. Richard Barker, Rev. David Chrisman, and Rev. Tim Fox officiating. Burial will follow in Layland Cemetery, Layland.
Visitation will be held today at the church from 6 to 8 p.m.
