Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. William C. Bishop Jr., age 84, of Carolina Trace, Sanford, N.C., died on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at Central Carolina Hospital.
Mr. Bishop was born on Feb. 28,1925, at Scarbro, W.Va., to the late William C. Bishop Sr. and Eleanor Hepler Bishop.
He was a 1942 graduate of Oak Hill High School, attended VPI and graduated from the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y. in 1946. He received his MBA from the University of Alabama in 1956. His 21 years of active duty in the US Army included tours in Germany, Korea, and four years as manager of the Army Athletic Association at West Point. Upon retirement from the army in 1967, he joined the New York Telephone and was Vice President of Empire City Subway Company (a subsidiary of New York Telephone) when he retired in 1988. He spent his retirement years at Carolina Trace, Sanford, N.C. and was a member of the Carolina Trace Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine S. Bishop of Carolina Trace; one daughter, Martha Bishop Brown of Annapolis, Md.; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Fregiato of Washington, D.C. and Mary Hollis Brown of Asheville, N.C.; a sister, Carolyn Thornhill and husband, Warren of Daniels; and one sister-in-law, Connie Bishop of Birmingham, Ala.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Bishop Griffith, and husband, Robert, and a brother, Paul S. Bishop.A memorial service will be held at a later date at West Point.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
