Carl K. Shumate
Military funeral services will be held Friday for Navy Chief Quartermaster Carl K. Shumate, 45, who died suddenly Monday in Springfield, Ill.
Chief Shumate, who made his home at 5610 Broadway, was serving as a recruiting officer for the Navy in Springfield when he died. He had been in the Navy 20 years. He served in the South Pacific during World War II after surviving the Pearl Harbor bombing Dec. 7, 1941 aboard the destroyer USS Tucker.
A native of Williamson, W. Va., he is survived by his wife, Helen; his mother, Mrs. Cleo Bailey; his stepfather, R. G. Bailey; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Starr of San Leandro; and a brother, Robert L. Shumate.
Services conducted by the Rev. Fred B. Trevitt of the High Church Street, Presbyterian held at 1 p.m. Friday at Truman's Mortuary, 2935 Telegraph Ave. They will be followed by military honors at graveside services at 2:15 p.m. in Presidio National Cemetery in San Francisco.
