LEWISBURG -Allen H. Jeter of Lewisburg and New York City, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, surrounded by his many friends and family. Born Aug. 15, 1927, at Rainelle, he was the youngest son of Charles Jeter and Lorena Morrison Jeter. His brother Charles preceded him in death. His uncle, Bill Morrison, and aunt, Frances, raised him in Lawrenceville, Ill. He graduated from the University of Illinois, where he began a career as a jazz saxophonist. After graduating with a degree in business, he moved to New York City and lived in the creative lower east side with other musicians, playing his tenor saxophone nightly at local clubs in a style often compared to contemporaries Allen Eager or Lester Young. He also began a career as an investment banker and became executive vice president of Textile Bank, where he managed their client, Riverside Records. Mr. Jeter lived on the upper west side of New York City for 40 years, where his penthouse jam sessions were famous in the '60's and '70's. In 1989, he recreated "Al Jeter's," a gourmet jazz restaurant on New York's W. 58th Street, with pianists like James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Harold Mabern or Sir Roland Hanna playing for his guests. After retirement, he returned to Greenbrier County, to look after his beloved aunt, Margaret Garner, and formed the Greenbrier Corporation to develop Highland Springs. In Lewisburg, forming jazz groups was a large part of his current work, from the Ghost Town Swing Band to his own collaborations with colleagues Gary Klein, Frank Spicer, Gary Moran, Larry Rockwell, Ron Free, Bob Peckman and Tony Hayworth. Al Jeter was a much-loved member of the Lewisburg community, not just for his musical contributions, but also for his kindness, generosity of spirit, ready smile and warm laid-back style. He is survived by his aunt, Margaret Garner of Greystone Manor, Lewisburg, several cousins and many loving friends and fans. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to MusiCares, 156 West 56th St. Suite 1701, New York, N.Y., 10019. Established in 1989 by the Recording Academy, MusiCares ensures that music people have a place to turn to in times of financial, medical or personal crisis. Memorial service for Mr. Jeter will be held at Old Stone Church in Lewisburg in early October. Arrangements by McCraw Funeral Home, Lewisburg.
