"MAMMY" BLAGG
Maria Jane Blagg, familiarly know by all our people as "Mammy" Blagg, died June 21, after a long illness at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Juergens, with whom she had lived since 1905. She was a daughter of Thomas and Catherine Lawrence, and was born May 3, 1840. She married Captain J. W. Blagg in 1882, and two years later they moved to Sutton. Captain Blagg died August 28, 1893. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Taylor.
It has not been our pleasure to know a better woman than "Mammy" Blagg. She was a generous and sympathetic soul whose chief interest seemed to be the welfare of her friends. She was a mother to the children and the grown-ups alike and no death in Sutton in recent years has brought real grief to so many hearts.
The last thirteen years of her life were pleasantly spent in the good home of Mr. and Mrs. Juergens, where she received the most kind and considerate care and attention.
Funeral services were conducted at the Juergens home on Sunday, June 28, by Rev. L. J. Huffman, who had baptized and officiated at the marriage of Mrs. Blagg, and her body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the Sutton cemetery.
The following poem, found in Mrs. Blagg's Bible, had been copied in her hand writing August 5, 1861, and is expressive of the trueness of her heart:
A True Heart.
When other friends are near thee,
When other hopes are thine,
When other joys have crowned thee,
More fresh, more green, than mine,
Oh, think how sand and lonely
This doting heart will be,
Which, while it throbs, throbs only,
Beloved one, for thee.
Oh, do not think I doubt thee,
I know thy truth remains,
I would not live without thee
For all the world contains.
Thou art the star that guides me
Adown life's stormy sea,
And whate'er fate betides me,
This heart still turns to thee.
