4 Teenagers Die in Crash
RAINELLE ? Four Greenbrier County teenagers were killed early Sunday when the car in which they were riding smashed into a vacant building on Main Street in Rainelle, state police said.
Killed outright in the crash were Summers "Sonny" Winford Shawver, 17, of Charmco; Kenneth Wayne Brackenridge, 16, of Rupert; and Howard Lawson, 17, of Charmco. Larry Bowles, 16, of Charmco; died shortly after he arrived at Greenbrier Valley Hospital at Fairlea.
Police said the car left the street at a high rate of speed and smashed into the vacant structure which formerly housed a hospital. The accident occurred about 12:30 a.m.
Shawver, a senior at Greenbrier West High School, was the son of James and Katherine Keeney Shawver of Charmco. Also surviving: brothers, Donald of Covington, Va., Ronald of Roanoke, Va., James, at home; grandmothers, Mrs. S.W. Kenney of McRoss and Mrs. Lena Shawver of Charmco. Service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, with the Rev. Pearly Orndorff officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Memorial Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.
Brackenridge, a student at Rupert Junior High, was the son of Paul and Louella Neff Brackenridge of Rupert. Also surviving: half-sisters, Mrs. Linda Carol Smith of Layland, Mrs. Doris Ann Ritchie of Oak Hill; brothers, Edward and Joseph, both at home; half-brother, Michael Keyser at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Brackenridge of Hines, Mrs. Ida Pearl Fitzwater of Oak Hill and Erskine Neff of Oak Hill. Service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in Jesus Name Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Otis Black officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Cemetery at Clintonville. The body will be taken to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Brackenridge at 5 p.m. Tuesday and will be taken to the church one hour before service. Wallace-Wallace Funeral Home, Rainelle, is in charge of arrangements.
LAWSON ATTENDED Greenbrier West High School and was affiliated with Newton Memorial Baptist Church in Charmco. Surviving: parents, Herbert E. and Betty Reed Lawson of Charmco; sister, Deborah Ann, at home; brother, Ronald Lee of Tucson, Ariz.; grandmother, Mrs. Doris Lawson of Flemington. Service will be 1 p.m. Wednesday in Smathers Funeral Home, Rainelle, with the Rev. Willie Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Wallace Memorial Cemetery at Clintonville. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday.
