Jessie James Phipps, 61, of Sandlick, Mercer County, died Aug. 27, 1987, at home after an apparent heart attack. He was born in Sandlick. He was a retired miner and a member of UMW. He was a member of Naomi Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving: wife, Velma Jewell Dickens Phipps; son, James L. of Orlando, Fla.; daughters, Linda Darlene Leffingwell of Fayetteville, N.C., Brenda Gale Phipps at home; brothers, Frank of Beckley, Grover of Union, Ohio, Harold of Drexel, Ohio, Carlos of Milton, John Henry of Dayton, Ohio, Barney of Brookville, Ohio, Joe and Carl, both of Denver, Colo.; half brother, Lacy Phipps of Englewood, Ohio; sisters, Anna Mae Daniel of Sophia, Mary Lee Neff of Englewood, Ohio, Frankie June Price of Beckley, Margie Daniel of Denver, Colo.; half sister, Virgie Lucas of Malden; three grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Sunday, at Mattsville Community Church, Sandlick, with the Rev. Jerry Brooks and the Rev. Ray Clemmons officiating. Burial will be in Adkins Cemetery, Sandlick. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the church.
