Charles Lee ?Cisco? Phipps, age 76, slipped away in the early morning hours of July 24, 2007 in Bradenton, Fla., after a long and courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease.
Charles was born in Milburn, W.Va., to parents Clara and Enoch Phipps. His family moved to Alderson, W.Va., when he was the age of nine, where he spent many happy and also lonely years, leaving to serve in the Army/Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Charles was retired from the Air Force with a Medical Service Connected Honorable Discharge. He moved to the Northern Virginia area where he met and married Barbara Abrahams and they had two daughters, Bobbi and Lisa.
He began his 35 year career in the Heavy Hauling and Rigging Business, learning under the stewardship of Leon Abrahams/Potomac Rigging. During these years, the name ?Charlie Phipps? became a well known and respected name in the industry. His knowledge, experience, dependability, and honesty offered the opportunity to move with Charles A. Sloan/United Rigging and Hauling, Beltsville, Maryland, where he served as Executive Vice President and Operations Manager. When ask about his success, he always gave the credit to the people that worked for and with him. During this time, he was married to Ina Faye Taylor and upon his retirement, they chose to retire to Atlanta, Georgia.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Ina Faye; a brother, Robert E. Phipps, Sr. and his wife, Helen, of Martinsville, Va.; daughters, Bobbi Hyder and her husband, Pete, of Murrells Inlet, S.C., Lisa Christian of Broadlands, Va., and Cheryl Dixon and her husband, Rickey, of Myakka City, Fla.; sons, George E. Taylor, Jr. of Myakka City, Fla., Walter Gary Taylor and his wife, Tina, of Mc Donough, Ga., and Eugene Taylor and his wife, Mary, of Cartersville, Ga. He also leaves nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and many more extended family members and friends.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held for Charles on Saturday, September 1, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church, Alderson , W.Va. with the Rev. Sam Groves officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery, Alderson, W.Va., where military funeral honors will be conducted by the West Virginia Army National Guard and Gauley Bridge VFW Post 8366, Gauley Bridge, W.Va.
