Oregon Resident Succumbs At 57
MEADOW BLUFF (RNS) - Hansford H. Phipps, 57, of Portland, Ore., formerly of Meadow Bluff, died Saturday in a Portland hospital after a long illness.
He was a veteran of World War II and son of Mrs. Virginia Phipps of Meadow Bluff and the late Lewis Phipps.
Other survivors include his wife, Mary O'Dell Phipps of Rainelle; a daughter, Miss Carolyn Phipps of Richwood; seven sisters, Mrs. Effie Chase of Hillsboro, Ore., Mrs. Margy Counts of Duo, Mrs. Blanche Thompson of Clintonville, Mrs. Frances Hiser of Crawley, Mrs. Stella Hunter of Meadow Bluff, Mrs. Louise Trofitt of North Carolina, and Mrs. Gertrude Thompson of Lordsburg, N. M., and three brothers, Edward of Banks, Ore., Ulysses of Lordsburg and Noah of Agate Beach, Ore.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today in the Gobel Funeral Home in Portland. Burial will be in Williamnette National Cemetery at Portland.

Phipps Rites Read Tuesday
Hansford H. Phipps, Mist Drive, Vernonia, passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Portland May 15, 1971, following an extended illness. He was born August 2, 1914 in Mt. Hope, Raleigh County, West Virginia. He had resided in Vernonia in recent years, but lived a number of years in the Banks area.
Rev. J. E. Baker of the Timber Friends Church officiated at the services which were conducted at the Gable Funeral Home in Portland, Tuesday, May 18.
Acting as pallbearers were Robert Borders, Barry Tunison, Anthony Osborne, James Koch, Ralph Lunsford and M. F. Garmon. H. Lynn Gordon, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. H. A. Hunderup, organist.
Mr. Phipps followed the logging and mechanical trades during his lifetime. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving from 1942 - 1945.
Surviving include: His mother, Mrs. Louis (Virginia) Phipps; a daughter, Carolyn, in West Virginia; seven sisters, Effie Chase of Hillsboro, Louise Prorfiett in No. Carolina, Gertrude Thompson, New Mexico, and Blanche Thompson, Stella Hunter, Frances Heser and Margie McCarthy, all in W.V.; and three brothers, Ulysses, N.M., Noah, Agate Beach, and Edward of Banks.
Another brother and his father preceded him in death.
Concluding rites and interment were in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
